It's still misleading as the government figures include anyone who was COVID19 positive at the time of death regardless (so could include a car accident death for example)
The office for national statistics will be a better guide as they use the death certificate and will only count them as COVID19 if it has been listed as a contributing/main factor.
However, the OFNS stats take time to compile and there is currently around an 11 day lag (we are due be stats tomorrow).
These stats also list non COVID19 deaths so we should start to be able to build a picture up over the next few weeks.
In March 2019, there were around 1350 deaths per day in England and Wales, so that will be a decent enough baseline.
However, even that number will be affected by the current 'lockdown' and things like traffic fatalities will be down as well.
Unfortunately, is just going to take time before we know how this is actually playing out.

800 of those deaths were from care homes, however they were from over a few weeks, not just one day (they counted the backlog all at once).
