since I'm a bit of a newbie at lifting weights I wanted a bit of technical advice,

when push pressing do you go up on to your toes or do you keep the feet flat?

is there an optimum position for your hands on the bar when push pressing? ,i find a narrower grip more comfortable for my dodgy shoulders ,but I'm not sure if its the best for strength!

with dumbell pressing on a bench should i go as wide as possible with the range of movement with elbows flared or should I do it like i bench with elbows tucked in!

on push press ed i would keep my feet flat to the floor its got to give you more drive ignore that im thinking of m,press push press would be better to go up on your toes, and hands a bit wider than shoulders, d,bell press i would try and keep elbows in or there would be alot of stress on the shoulders, and you would get more work on your triceps,d,bell bench i find hard on your own when your using heavy weight would be great to have someone hand you the d,bells,i was thinking that mayby the bands i have may be of some use with them(waits golden ones opinion} just my opinion mate.

I think flaring your elbows is better on dumbell press because you're doing it to strengthen the pec muscles - why would you want to avoid them by tucking? Dumbell pressing isn't bad on the shoulders like bench for a variety of reasons mainly because it's not a fixed ROM.

As for push pressing, go on your toes for sure, try and concentrate on pushing the hips through at the end, quick up quick down but not too far down. Will have to try and get some vids of Jeff/Andy doing it.

dont agree with that Rob if you flare your arms out with no weights and stretch them back the first thing you feel is pressure on the shoulders chest and neck, arms tucked and its more pecsTongueHappy

i agree with rob, aslong as your elbow is in line with your chest, rather than inline with your delts, it winng put more stress on the chest than delts

Here's one of Wigan ftsquatting and push pressing.

I don't think that's true - how come bodybuilders bench with flared elbows? ... they do it to target the pecs. By tucking you are bringing lats and triceps into the equation more, not your pecs.

There are some great, great benchers at Adlington who don't go for the 'traditional tuck' which some people nowadays seem to think is the only way to bench - Big Steve (500+ raw bench) benches without much of a tuck, he is very strong off the pecs.

If doing dumbell presses without a tuck hurts your shoulders Tom then I think you have some flexibility or muscle imbalances to sort out.
AvatarJoni
steve couldnt tuck even if he tried, his lats are too big!
