Yeah thats the plan mate. Need to be doing the long miles at the moment as my training partner is doing the entire tour de France in a few weeks.

Saturday 10th May

London - Cambridge - London
129 miles
First 55 miles - 19.1mph
First 110 miles - 17.5mph

This was f**king brutal. easily the longest miles I've done in a day and the first 55 were done non stop at an average of over 19mph. To be honest, we weren't even pushing except for the last 5 or 6 as we realised we could average over 19. #

Then stop for lunch and turn around. The weather coming back was horrendous, cross wind, head winds, hale, thunder etc. Ended up doing the first 110 miles at 17.5mph. Pretty damn well pleased with that!

Sunday - Rest
Monday - Rest

Brutal cycling.

Quick question for you - not sure what relevance cycling on an upright gym bike has, but I'd be interested in doing 1,000m or 4,000m track cycling.

Managed 2,000m in 3:04 (gym bike) with only a few sessions training. Do you think 1:30 for 1,000m would be a good level for a beginner to contemplate taking it a step further, or is there too much difference between a real bike and a gym one? I have a road bike that I could fix up, then find an open stretch of A-road to see what time I can do 1k in?

Just seen that I would've been beated by about 20 seconds buy U17 boys if I did 2,000m 3:04 on a real bike. Should try doing 2k but gunning it.

Funky - Let me give it some thought and get back to you mate.

Been pretty busy with work and life in general so most of the riding has been commuting midweek and long rides on the weekend. Not had time for much other 'training' midweek.

Big weekend of riding to catch up on:

Saturday 25th May

Brands Hatch Short Route
Caught the train to about 6 miles from the start and then went straight into it. Nailed until the end of the sportive route virtually non stop, had some food and then rode back into London. I've been saying this a lot lately, but that first 78 miles was some of the hardest cycling I've ever done. Going that long without stopping just plain hurts. The sportive route kicks hard at the end with one last climb with a nice 1km @10% to finish it off. I was feeling pretty grim at that point.

First 78 miles:
- 1468m of climbing
- 85rpm
- 17.4mph

Total:
- 106.8 miles
- 1789m of climbing

Sunday 27th May

Surrey Semi Epic
This is the short version of a pretty tough sportive taking in the Surrey Hills. Turns out the short route still has all the climbs they just take out 25 miles of flat... Felt much stronger on the bike today compared to Saturday and managed to take a few nice PBs on some of the climbs. Apart from a puncture, this was again done pretty much non stop.

Main 80 miles:
- 1548m of climbing
- 82rpm
- 16.5mph

Total:
- 92 miles
- 1638m of climbing

Wednesday 29th May

A20 TT Recce
48 miles

Went out to set a base time on a nice out and back TT route that I'm hoping to use in my training. Got half way along the route and realised my garmin wasn't on. I wasn't massively impressed. The route is a pretty fast 9km stretch with roundabouts at each end. About 180m of climbing going one way. I will hopefully start using this road for some threshold and more power based intervals.

how did it go today mate ?

i'm presuming you got cooked in every way possible ?

realisticly , how many times should I be doing 150k+ in training for the ironman ? I probably have 7 weeks befor I have to ease off and all that shizzle , I do have a few random days off booked for training purposes as it takes way too much family time away

thinking about my one long ride it makes me realise how much LEJOG must have raped you to bits !!

If it were me, I would want to go 100+ on at least two more occasions, ideally 3. I realise that the time involved is a real limiter but it really DOES get easier and your long ride fitness improves with every ride. If I were to only get 2 more rides in of that length then I would make 1 of them the full distance. Those last twelve miles might come as a bit of a shock otherwise.

I would try and get a few more 120 minute rides in. It looks like the 1 lap would be pretty much perfect although realise that doing that same loop over and over might get pretty dull. Realistically, it doesnt have that much climbing in so if you chose to do different roads it wouldn't be an issue, as long as you were doing some climbing work on the turbo/another time.

Yeah LEJOG hurt, but to be honest, 4 deys in and you find your legs and you end up with this ability to just grind it out. Day 1 (112 miles, 2800m of climbing) nearly bloody killed me mind you.

Yesterday was a disaster. Managed to cut a nice whole in my tyre on a descent quite aerly on. 4 punctures later it was time to admit defeat and I binned it after 442 miles. Shame as the weather was all kinds of nice.

I've been massively neglecting my TT training. The focus on it starts today! 6 months to hit my target, I think my chances are slim to none. Grin

Finally started to get some TT training in. Think I've got some semblance of a plan coming together, just need to stick to it now.

Monday 3rd June

Time Trial Effort
65m 18s
447m of climbing
22.6 miles
20.7mph

It's an out and back course with a roundabout at each end. One way climbs about 220m and then drops down on the way back. Had a 10mph headwind so it made the ascent pretty grim.

Also managed to hit a nice PB on a regular climb going home on Wednesday.

Monday 10th June

3 x 5 min Effort
3 goes up a shallow climb, with twice as much rest as the effort. Managed to hit pbs on all 3 efforts. This is meant to be 5 efforts but was really feeling it after a bit too much fun on the weekend. All 3 efforts within 9 seconds of each other and 310m of climbing in total.

Wednesday 12th June

Hill Cruise Intervals
...or at least that was the intention.

Plan was to head out to Sevenoaks and do a hill 5 times with no rest apart from rolling back down. The weather had other idess. 20mph winds, horrible driving rain, and most worryingly pretty dark (I had no lights). Made it up twice and then binned it and went home. Still ended up a decent ride but not what was intended.

- 50 miles
- 915m of climbing

Plan is for something hilly on Saturday.
