the distribution of weights is a "normal" or bell shaped graph so if you are very light or very heavy you have few peers. On sunday I think there is 6 in the 90kg class and several in the 82.5.

So why have so many heavier or lighter classes? It's a serious question, I'm not trying to wind anybody up. If there are so many fewer competitors outside those classes, why not pair the classes up, or merge three into two?

Classes at, say, 65, 75, 82, 90, 105, unlimited. Still lots of titles, but also lots more competition.

i'm not bothered about the number of weight classes, they are what they are , but if they were to be changed i would go with:

67.5 - 80 - 90 - 105 - 105+

Changing the bodyweight classes has been tried boys. It did f**k all for either attendance or performance.

Rather than attracting new members has anyone considered first trying to hold onto the lifters the associations already have, and keep them in the sport? Or maybe raising it at national level? They leave for some reason or other dont they?

Interestingly there is a recent thread on this (perceived lack of competition) elsewhere: http://www.powerliftingwatch.com/node/6650

which leads me to the knowledge that there *is* a widely-accepted compensation system a la Wilks for age.

Masters: http://www.irondawg.com/master%20age%20formula.htm

Juniors: http://www.usapl-sd.com/Formulas/Foster.htm

Apparently these are used along with Wilks for best lifter awards at USAPL (American IPF affiliate) meets, and many others, and at the USAPL Masters meets you have to win your weight class across all masters divisions on formula. If my sums are correct, that would have meant Andy Kerr just topping Big Jim for UK Masters 125+.

So, Pete, now you have a better scientific approach to compare your lifts with Joe's if you want to. Your league numbers are about 43 ahead on adjusted wilks, and make you by some distance the best IPF lifter in the Sugden league (#3 overall, on adjusted Wilks).

lol! Don't know how and why I stumbled across this thread but former Arsenal legend Martin Keown who lives in Oxford has taken up powerlifting (seriously!). He trains at my gym about twice a week cause his son does some sort of athletics training there. He's 42 and could probably qualify for M1 unequipped. I'm trying to convince him to lift at the South Mids divisionals at the end of the year.

Is he the same weight as Daniel Craig?

lol. A bit chunkier I'd say but still under 90kg. Never met Craig in the flesh though.

Craig vs Keown would be nice
