» Hook grip advice. (Go to post)23-12-2015 @ 11:35
Wes said:Hoping to persevere in't coming months, starting this week, and try and learn the hook grip for Deadlifting.

Any advice or words o wisdom from any that have done it in't past ?
Hoping to at least use it for my warm up sets, stop when it becomes too much and inch up week by week.

that's what I did - it's just the discomfort that is needed to overcome really - I also go double overhand until that gets too hard then switch as too much hooking rips the skin up. Taken my dohg max deadlift from 170kg to 220kg as well doing this which I think has helped hook strength.

Good to see you back. 70kg is a sensible target to allow an easy cut for 67.5kg class.

Ralls PL crew night out

curls 1x4@pint stella
1x2@cocktails
1x1@hendricks gin double

really enjoyed that - training is so focused nice to spend some time socialising.

i like max - he's another crazy frequency squatter!

what i notice is they don't psyche up in anyway... respecting the whole training v comp max thing.

there's a video of max doing 6-7 sets of 5 with 260kg failing reps all over.. but he never looks like he's stressing at all.
he just ambles up, squats 3-4 hard reps has a go with the next, if it comes to a halt he simply hurls the bar off his back
with a 'so what' look on his face and returns to do another set.

Thanks Grin
I will try to log more often again, busy with work as well. So then i train after and fall asleep haha.
But yeah my explosive power is best power i have. Also my behind the neck jerks are quite high.

bet your 1RM dead is far better than 230 if you can do 200x10, especially being so explosive.

3 plates 140kg is a reasonable target.
Don't neglect other lifts though chasing a big bench - from your numbers your squat needs bringing up more.

deloading/light now over christmas holidays, hip is sore, shoulder sore and definitely struggling with sleep so CNS is probably a bit fried. may go to ralls once next week but i'm not going to do anything heavy at all...

next year i'm going to train more sensibly. got some great 'beginner' gains moving from general training to
proper focused powerlifting (especially since training as part of a team at ralls).

with that in mind

benching:
it's been pointed out by 2 most experienced lifters there (andy bolton+dave carter) that i need to work on my benching setup to squeeze another 10-15kg without getting any 'stronger' so that will be a training modality now.
watching likes of emma and macca do their setup makes me realize how far i've got to go technically there.

squatting needs more sets of 3, building up from about 75% 1RM - new comp wraps as well, the titaniums are spent and the lilliebridges have lost some oomph. lilliebridges will become the new 'training' wrap

deadlifting again more doubles and triples around 75-85%.. no heavy grinders - avoid temptation to get involved in block pull battles however fun they are.

Mikeneto said:Well he recently done a 220kg clean and jerk on his facebook. His squats look very strong at the moment also.

yes saw 260x5x5 paused no belt, wraps and rock bottom.. so many grinders too. how on earth does his CNS recover from this to do it so frequently?

his squatting frequency and intensity is mental. smolov intensification phase is his deload.

I can never get my head round squatting more than a deadlift, very good numbers though!!

Depends on your build - I'm your archetypal short femured, long backed squat build. Wouldn't be surprised if my knee wraps squat has overtaken my deadlift if i did a comp now - it was only 1kg behind last one.

Squats
80 x 8
110 x 3,
140 x 2,
170 x 2, 2m wraps loose
200 x 2, add belt
230 x 1, tighten
260 x 6 2.5m tight

Deadlifts
70 x 5
120 x 3
170 x 2
210 x 1
240 x 1
270 x 1
300 x F

Squat reps was tough really at limit but a good PB.

Deadlift actually pleased despite fail. Built up a fair bit of fatigue going so heavy last 2 weeks and after those squats too. Stiff bar and managed to get it a moving just couldn't get past mid shin weak point but it was close. Competition after a taper on deadlift bar think 300+ easily there.

Once went to one called PureGym in Spinningfields, Manchester.
Never in the history of mankind, have so many 'youtube training fail' exercises been performed in such a small free weight area.
