Saturday 15th November, Adlington

Benching with Pete and Andy. Went round the M6 way and collected Andy due to Wanderers home game. Did I mention I hate football? Good bo***cks-talking opportunity, though, and always fun to show off the microcar Happy.

Speed Bench
20x30
20x20
20x20
20x20
50x5
70x3
80x3
90x3
100x3
110x3
120x3 long pauses this set only
110x3
110x3 doing this makes more sense than what I have been doing (descending back to 70)
110x3

Fin. Managed to rip one leg of my jeans half-way off at the top and back of the thigh, so into town to buy some new ones. Accidentally bought two new suits (one mid-blue, one cream) while I was there. Hey ho Happy.

I shall make a point of coming in to see you in it when first I'm wearing it on a training day Happy.

I was sceptical about a lighter-coloured suit on me, but these two both seemed to work rather well. It'll help leaven the half-dozen dark ones, anyway.

Monday 17th November, Adlington

Not a bad session at all.

Squat in the centurion 50
20x10
70x5
115x5 then straps up for
160x3
180x2 then wraps for
205x2
225 borderline
240 in Happy
250 high by a little, fell forward a touch and didn't quite get down
205x3 all just a tiny bit high

The 205x3 was a second attempt; Alan put me straight on after the high 250, but I lost all sensation in my lower legs (from having the wraps on too long) and walked it out and lurched it back in before I collapsed. Took five and did it right.

Not bad, then, but nothing like the magnificent squatting demonstrated by both Joe and Pete!

good squatting Rick, you are getting better each session as you become more comfortable with the weight, the depth will come.

Thanks guys. I can feel now exactly what I need to get up and down well, if I can squat 225+ with the same form as I did the backoffs tonight they'll be NICE. Got the dig right and sat back enough to keep the suit happy there Happy.

Wednesday 19th November, Adlington

Benching with Jake, and later with Pete, both of whom had the best sessions I've ever seen from them. Mine was not that good.

Bench
20x30
20x20
20x20
20x20
50x8
70x5
90x3
110x2
120
130
Titan Katana 52" on:
150 to 2 board
160 to 1 board
170
180
185xx here the flinching on the descent (more of which later) knocked me off line, and I threw it back over my face.
165 decent
165 very decent
165 not bad

The problem is simple. My forearms are still sore under weight (and I suspect still slightly swollen) from the aftermath of Monday heavy squatting. About half-way down, they give me a twinge, and I (usually) flinch, which does not lend itself to a smooth fast descent or a good line. This will not, of course, be a problem on the day.

Next Wednesday I'll go for a Nurofen Plus or similar rather than just Vitamin I, and see if that gives me a nicer last session. Post-comp, the plan is to change my training days around so that heavy bench is after deadlifts rather than after squats. I may need to consider moving my hands out a bit too, though I'd much rather not.

The big downside of changing my training days around would be that (doing it in what seems to be the most sensible way) I would no longer ever be working in with Pete, which would be a great shame. On the other hand, we'd still be training together, just not doing the same lift. In any case, if it's needed, it's needed, and it's looking like it is.
