How do people stop doing it?
I remember when I was doing documentary films I found a number of people who wanted to cut off their own legs/or arms because they wanted to become disabled. It's called Apotemnophilia. Some people have gone as far as doing it, but I don't think any of the ones I talked to did.

When I used to go on body mod forums now and again used to see afew people who had done this but don't think it was for a want of being disabled more of an addiction of wanting a more extreme modification than the last
Scary s**t

removing a leg certainly is a top end body modification ...deffo gain ADMIN status on a body mod forum
i remember seeing somthing about that - the people can be 'cured' and actually feel better after the leg is removed ...they dont go on to want an arm off ...

I think what Dan is talking about isn't something you can really stop, rather you can just try and control it.
I work in a similar environment to Dan and have seen conditions that cause the sufferer to have an overwhelming urge to eat, constantly. It doesn't matter what they're eating, it just has to be something, anything. Its not something they really want to do, its an uncontrollable compulsion.

So is it literally a form of OCD? Or at least in the same disorder group?

The condition I'm thinking of is a bit different because its a genetic thing.

That's the one I've had experience of. Not the same as what this sponge eating girl has, but similar in that it can result in the sufferer eating anything.

yeah with our service users its a case of trying to make sure they cant find anything odd to eat, bits of paper, fag ends, leaves, dead animals, pen lids, clothing labels etc etc you just have to watch them you cant cure it
