The hair is now short! But i am scrawnier than ever admittedly.

I want 70k x 5 within 8 weeks.

I think a 100k Strict Overhead would be a good starting point for novice strongman from what I've read.

nah f**k it is man, 100kg strict is too much to wait for before nailing comps Grin

Currently best strict is 87.5, push press 107.5. When i did my first comp, the first timers strongman comp this march, my push press was probably 95 and strict was not even 80 Grin And i placed midway.

100kg push press, now that i would take maybe as some kind of guidance, though wouldnt even worry about that if other events suit better than overhead.

lol, admit it you filthy bas***d!

Aye mate, push press so much more important. You see guys at the novice comps trying to bang out strict reps and get folk who are gerenally much weaker pressers nailing more points because their technique is better. Log press, viking press, axle press are all in the leg drive i think.

Novice level comps have log press ranging from 80-90kg, it should fly with 100kg push press and some log training. Viking press ranges from 90-100kg in hands, again, will fly with 100kg push press.

Strict press is not a bad assistance exercise but prioritise the push press man, its so technical and needs the volume put in before benefits come out. Push press + narrow grips = big log, viking press and axle!

Well I did a 90kg push press in my first 6 months of training, and was only benching 70kg's at the time lol.

I will try some push press today and report back tomorrow.

Squats and deadlifts tomorrow.

A few comments on today's workout.

1) Doing abs at the beginning of the workout, as a warmup and as general work to improve conditioning, actually quite enjoyed it.

2) Powercleans were fun, my balance was crap which was to be expected. I find getting in the right position to push press the weight hard after the clean, so I may separate the two movements from now on. I'm confident of a 100kg push press with a couple of months though, and 120 or more within a year.

3) Squats were ok considering I haven't done them for a year. 120k x 3 is nothing, but with a crap power rack, no belt and having done a fair bit of work beforehand, I think 182.5k with a belt should return pretty quick.

Main problem I have with squats atm is that my upper back doesn't have the mass to allow me to get the bar in a decent position, I have no 'shelf' so to speak. I may drop the powercleans for a while, or just do them really light after squats to work on technique...

Squats, benches, Deadlifts, Bent rows and push presses are going to be the movements every workout is centred on, I will follow up with lots of assistance work mainly in the upper back, chest and arm area.

It feels great to be back.

Footnote

No where near enough volume on squats today, hence I'll be dropping the powercleans prior to them. Think I need to be looking at at least 4-5 sets above 125kg's for triples/doubles/singles and fives.

Need to do some BBer stuff for unadulterated randiness.

Another prospective strongman! Good to see. Completely agree with jonis comments on pressing. The only strict pressing I do is the occasional set of standing DB press, dips and lockouts. Another thing you might try is clean + push press for reps in 60/75/90secs. Most overhead events in competition are for reps in a time limit so its good to condition yourself to banging out reps quickly. Good luck with the strongman training!

Good luck with the comeback, Badboy. Are you devastated that someone else has already stolen the moniker 'The Comeback Kid'? Don't let that put you off your training.
