Id stick with close grip bench over dips. Get that up nice and heavy, work your push press and front squats and you'll be getting in plenty of training for a big log press. I know some people get good carryover from dips but lots dont, and Ive never known a single person not get carryover from close grips.

I think the cleans would be a good addition too. Get those hips firing! Good for the randiness too....Wink

Yeah agree on the close grips, may drop dips altogether actually, don't know how useful they are apart from increasing work capacity.

Mate, I'm pretty aggressive in those situations at the best of times, adding in a vicious hip thrust may get me in trouble...

I have also eyed up the BDFPA Strongman comp as my 'target' comp.. looks to have good events too. BW Must be at least 93kg's ( still very scrawny for a SM)

the trouble with BDFPA comps is that you need to join the org like 3+ months in advance to enter. Normal novice comps you just show up and pay the entry fee (sometimes not even that).

I could wholeheartedly recommend aiming to nail Severn Valley Strongman comp next year. Well run, not too far from where you are, plenty of folk from different levels, not too light, not too heavy, exellent way to get into the game. WILLSAN, buzz and me nailed the comp this summer from this board. But there might be some other nice comps coming up as well, just dont postpone it too much mate!

And about training the ceps, they are essential in looking good whilst doing the events at the comp Cool

Good recommendation Joni..

What bicep/lat work would you recommending for 'pulling' events (of both kinds Wink )

And I am gunna jump in to a comp within 8 months.. and probs a powerlifting contest before then.

Maybe a mini/training meet with you fellas up north would be good.

How the hell would you know about that?Grin

I agree with the rest though. A comp like that would be a great aim for your training Andy.

I agree with joni. I had a blast at severn valley this year and learnt loads. Definateley would be a good first comp. It would be a good idea to get as much event training in from now until then as physically possible though!

I wouldn't go asking Joni for Bicep tips... I think his PB is 16" at 120 kilos.

Great to see you on the board mate, best of luck with it all. See you in the future at Adders sometime hopefully.

Id go with Joni. You might have strained something but im sure it'll be something minor. Ab problems always feel a lot worse because you never realise just how much you use them until youve hurt one (coughing, s**tting, shagging etc).

Can you feel any lump or anything? Hope its not too serious.
