Today, it would seem is Pi approximation day.

Pi, I recall from my schooldays, when expressed as a fraction is 22/7, which is also today's date. Ho, ho, ho.

I wonder if schools still teach Pi as a fraction

Generally not, Pete; there's no point. It turns out that, when the teachers of the 1980s and 1990s said "you won't always have a calculator in your pocket, you know!", they were wrong.

A nice easy four today.

A straightforward four

YxxxY
xxxxx
xYxxY

Used slightly modified openers today but this didn't really test them

Interesting. They couldn't tell us that but my generation went through all our school years using logarithms and slide rules. Neither heard of nor saw a calculator until I was working at Gardner Engines, so circa 1977.

Interestingly, that first calculator was huge, very crude and cost the draughtsman who bought it around three weeks wages.

Busy day today, Wigan in the morning for an ECG and kudos to them for a very prompt and efficient service. My brother dropped me at 9.20 and picked me up again at 9:50. Thirty minutes for the whole thing. Impressive I call that. Damned impressive.

A slow and thoughtful fail

xxxxY
xGxxx
xYxxx
xGxGG
xGxGG
xGxGG

Obviously I tried to go tactical on the fifth try, but as only lesser used letters were left I simply couldn't think of one. Tried the more obvious of the solutions I could think of and failed. To be honest I don't think the answer ever entered my mind. No objections to it though.

Annoyingly, had I not used my revised, supposedly improved openers, the old ones would have given me a very useful letter that the new ones didn't. Ah well, hindsight eh ?

hopefully better accuracy than the Indiana Pi Bill of 1897 which had it defined as pi = 3.2. I wonder how many engineering projects there didn't work or broke as a result?
