On one of the episodes of countdown during the week, the lovely Susie Dent revealed that the persistent questioning of someone was known as rogitation (spelling unknown).

Having the dictionary out for today's wordle I decided to take the opportunity to look up said word.

It isn't in.

The reason is that there are several pages missing. It jumps from page 1724 to 1757 and one of those would be where this word should appear. There is no damage, it has obvious been unintentionally made this way.

Now the question is - have they simply been omitted of have they been placed elsewhere ? Answers on a postcard please.

A tortured three

GxYxx
GGxGx

I was quite confident with my second guess, wrongly so as it turned out. Nothing readily sprang to mind so I went through my usual procedure of writing down the known letters and spaces and then running through the alphabet to see what could fill the void. Nothing did.
I did however have a vague memory of something my recently acquired cardiologist had said, just a word, six letters ending "um". And words ending "um" lose the "um" and gain an "a" in their plural,(stadium/stadia for example). It was a straw to clutch at, and that straw held. Horrible day, worst wordle thus far.

As often, I'm here because I did Wordle, and I did Wordle because people were whining about it. Usual openers:

xxxxx
YYYGx long, long think:
GGGGG

Unusual word, but I didn't think it unfair.

Good points well made.

I have read quite extensively about wordle. Here are the highlights as I remember them:

It was invented by a Welshman named Wardle.

He started with a list of approximately fifteen thousand words, which he and his girlfriend then whittled down to under three thousand by selecting the more common and avoiding the more obscure.

They don't use plurals.

Therefore I have no strong objection to the words but I consider it rum if the above are still true (if they ever were).

I used to set quizzes in the past, before mobile phones and the interweb complicated the hell out of it.

If you asked a Sherlock Holmes question like "who did he share his rooms with?" or "who was his landlady?" or "where did he live?" - those are fair enough.

But "what was professor Moriarty's legitimate salary?" or "what was purchased from Ross and Mangle's in the Fulham road?" I would consider a tad rum. Although there can be no dispute as to their legitimacy.

I have similar expectations for Wordle. Maybe I should abandon them.

PS. Moriarty's legitimate salary was seven hundred pounds per year, and the hound from "the Hound of the Baskerville's" was purchased at Ross and Mangles.

A yellow-less and straightforward five

Went for it after two factfinders, I should have used the third, as I did do as the fourth attempt, it proved to be very fruitful.

I said:I have contacted Collins about the above.
We await developments

I posted this on Saturday just gone, today being Tuesday, and this afternoon I received a reply.
As they were probably off at the weekend kudos to them for a very prompt reply. Further kudos to them as they have offered me a free replacement.

Similar to the man who couldn't pronounce "f's" and "th's" - you can't say fairer than that.

Well played Collins.
