There is a road about three miles from here called Bolton Road. I drive down this road every night on my way home from work and every night on the way home from the gym, for the past four months I have driven down this road very little, just when I return from r kid's.

Last night on my way home there was a sign - "road resurfacing starts here - delays likely"
And by "likely" they mean for certain

Why do they start this - today
Why do I start to use that road regularly again - to-f**kin'-day

For four months they could have resurfaced that road at zero inconvenience to me, but no, oh no, lets wait until the gym re-opens and Boom ! Now they start chucking tarmac and paint about. The world runs on spite, this is just more of an ever expanding pile of proof.

It wouldn't have been funny until now, Peter.

Monday, 27th July, start 16:00

So, at 3:15 in the PM my laptop was switched off and I picked up my pre-packed bag, walked to the car and drove to the gym, the first time sine March 20th. I am unsure what to expect.

Arrived at 4, changed into squat boots and knee sleeves plus one or two other things as well obviously and first thing is to see if I can bend down.

I can, and as a bonus I can stand up again, so I do a few good long sits and then approach the bar.

Squat
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
40 x 5
50 x 5
60 x 5
70 x 5
80 x 5
90 x 5
100 x 5
100 x 5
100 x 5
100 x 5
100 x 5
Experienced Pete-watchers that not only has my depth improved but apparently my ease in hitting has too. The bending down and standing up bit was all easy enough, although tomorrow will probably be dreadful, the only drawback was my back.

Panic not gentle reader the functioning part was fine, the only problem was that the "big boy" seg that ran across my traps and allowed me to do anything I liked with impunity has, over the last few months, softened to the delicacy of a 16 year old Cuban virgin's thighs.
Everything from 80 kilos onwards stung like hell, and the more I did the more it stung, happily everything else was getting easier. A few more sessions and all should be back to normal.

I really enjoyed this tonight. It was great to be enjoying the craic with the others and great to be back bending down and standing up again. The fact that I appear to be a shade more lithe and limber than before is a very welcome bonus. Fish finger butties for tea, I've had fun, and had a bar on my back once more. All is well with the world.

I love that you have become a man who cooks after a fashion - the old Pete would not have made a fishfinger butty very often!

Indeed. Wiggers informed me that breadcrumbs are not the only option, there is also batter.

That is so tempting that I shall have to give way to it

Today my legs are serving me notice that they are going to ache tomorrow, and maybe overmorrow.

So that's something to look forward to

My DOMs was very threatening yesterday without actually starting, and today is still more threat than delivery. I'm trying to keep using everything to ward it off...

I do feel immensely better for having done a bit, and it seems to have helped my dodgy shoulder and hip. So far so good...

Good stuff!

I must say, I'm very surprised that your flexibility has improved slightly. I would never have predicted that.

You're probably tacitly assuming that Pete did any kind of flexibility work in his normal routine Happy

As am I, I am a stone lighter as well, though how much a part that plays, if any, I couldn't say

You would, as Rick has pointed out be quite wrong if you did make that assumption, I did bugger all flexibility work before, but I did exactly that same amount during the last few months. Rested and a bit lighter is all I have to offer

Oh my effin' legs.

They are currently re-defining the word "ache"

Still they did warn me.

Wednesday, 29th July, start 16:00

It is never been a secret that I dislike bench press, nor have I ever denied being rather s**t at it. But I didn't quite realize just how s**t I am.

Bench, very raw
20 x 15
20 x 15
20 x 15
40 x 5
50 x 5
60 x 5
70 x 5
75 x 5
80 x 5
80 x 5
80 x 5
80 x 4*
70 x 5
70 x 4*

I had the rather bizarre notion that I could bench 100 tonight but that was obviously never going to happen as I only squatted that on Monday and I am reasonable at that. This ridiculous idea had been long dismissed before I set off for the gym. I had the wisdom to go from 70 to 75 but not the wisdom to stay there, I pressed on to 80 and from the first set onwards I knew it was too high. On the fourth set I managed four and then the fifth just stayed on my chest, and had not two of life's kinder weightlifters not wandered over to lift it off me it would have been there yet. I therefore lowered it to 70 and did a rather easy five and then made the second mistake of the night and decided to do another. Once again four were easy but the fifth stayed at the bottom and once again I was rescued by weightlifters. The tank is well and truly empty now so I get changed, thank the weightlifters for their kindness and ability to lift what I can't and head home. Not the best of nights then, mainly down to very poor weight selection, had I stayed at 75 I reckon I would have been all right. Then again - had I not been a phuckin' idiot I would have been all right.
