Very light session today, just getting a final feel for some of the Northerns kit. Everything felt good, found a comfortable foot placement for squats, and had no problems with comp weight sled now that i wasnt dragging it uphill.

Light squats and overhead tomorrow and thats probably it till comp day.

Another very light session, more active recovery than actual training, though i was generating some serious speed on the front squats. Followed this up with some foam rolling.

Probably do another similar session on Wednesday but with log press and speed deadlifts.

Final session before North Englands, just some light doubles to make sure everything is firing right. Slight twinge in lower back, but nothing I see hampering my performance come Saturday.

Goal is to improve on my performance from Yorkshires and place top 10, a log PB would also be nice.

North of England strongest man

Event 1, log from blocks.

130,
140 - f.
Missed my line on log and felt an unpleasant grinding in my shoulder on the opening lift, but rather than rack and try again i wobbled about and ground out the rep. Shoulder was in severe discomfort for the rest of the day and never got the close to the 140. 11th place.

Event 2, 18" axle deadlift

Failed.
No reason, just wasnt up to the task on the day. Wounded to screw this up. Joint last.

Event 3, barrel squat, 280 - 320

Got all 5 reps very easily, but as id expected it to be a lot harder i went quite slow which cost me some points. About 8th on this one.

Event 4, keg load

Got 3 kegs up and fourth to the platform but just fell a little short when i tried to load it. Middle of the field on this, only guys who beat me were the ones fighting for qualifying spots who all loaded 5 kegs.

Event five, 145 keg carry, 210 duck walk, 280 sled medley

Completed keg and duck walk. Still tired from keg loading going into this, and never tried lifting a keg over 120 so didnt know what to expect when they swapped out tyre flipping. As it happens keg was comfortable enough, got it done with no drops. Ran out of steam about half way down course with duck walk and had to put it down. Picked it up again but couldnt get moving forward so put it straight down and proceeded to bunny hop it, got it over the line and face planted, so no chance to getting to the sled. Again i was top of the also rans and behind the guys fighting to qualify, about 7th place.

Event 6, mas wrestling

Went out in the opening round, didnt even put up a fight, i was utterly broken after the medley and just wanted to lie down.

Overall 9th place.

Happy enough with the result for my first crack at Northerns, a definite improvement on my dead last from Yorkshires. Just have to hope whatever is wrong with my shoulder isn't too serious as ive got Elite Northerns in 3 weeks.

Main purpose of todays session was just to stretch out and test the shoulder, which didnt feel good at all.
Overhead pressing was comfortable enough, but lowering the weight back to the chest was very uncomfortable.
Close grip bench was fine through most of the ROM, but the bottom inch or so was very uncomfortable.
Front squats felt very strong, but i had to hold my straps as i was unable to get into a decent rack position.
Getting into position under the bar for squats was a bit awkward, but once there the shoulder felt fine and the squats moved great, the final 220 was probably one of the best beltless reps i ever done, and even included a brief pause in the hole.

Thinking i will make an appointment with physio on friday to have the shoulder checked, just need to find a new and competent physio first.

Much better session today, shoulder felt merely uncomfortable. Im unsure if this was down to the exercise selection, or because id been using it to some degree at work all day. Will find out tomorrow when i try strict pressing after a day at work.
Paused inclines were good, will likely go for 5 sets of 5 at the full 110 next time.
Stiff leg deads were solid, though a bit surprised my grip wasnt up to doing sets of 5 doh, had to reverse my usual alternate grip as right arm couldnt grip underhand.
Finished off with a little tricep work and some stretching.

Paused squats and strict press tomorrow, then an appointment with a very highly recommended physio on friday morning.

Tonight i learnt that if i take my grip out a little bit i can just about do a decent strict press, as long as i dont push my head through at the top of the rep. Not ideal, but just about serviceable.
Once again unable to hold a decent front rack position so had to use straps, actually found this really awkward today given that i had a reasonable weight on the bar. Plan was 5 sets of 5, but took a few sets to get 'comfortable' with the grip so ended up needing 7 sets to get the planned reps in.

Tried to finish with squats, but couldnt get under the bar without severe discomfort, so that was the end of that.
Pretty happy with the session, deadlifts in particular, back was seriously pumped by the end of it.
Not happy to have to press in Smith machine, but log was very uncomfortable so wasnt keen to try anything that could wobble.

Physio confirmed that id impinged one of the rotator cuff muscles, so hes done his thing and its now taped up. Got to keep taking anti inflammatories for a few days and seeing him again next week, but should be fighting fit in time for Northern Elite.

I cant recall where i came across the idea for German volume training, but it may be the dumbest thing i have ever done in a gym. Shoulder is still too sore to allow me to get under the bar properly, so was holding on to the plates, ed hall style.
Knee sleeves had to come down after the first three sets because legs were pumped and blood flow to the lower legs was becoming an issue. Somewhere around set 6 i was ready to give up and lie down.
When i eventually finished (squats took about 40 mins) i tried to lie down but my lower back was so pumped it was agony.
Took ten mins to stretch before heading back to the bench.
Presses were a piece of cake, shoulder was a little uncomfortable after the final couple of sets but nothing major.

Not sure on the plan for tomorrow, probably events, depends on the doms i suppose.

Decent session today, first time since Northerns ive felt strong.
Strict presses all moved ok.
I was able to get an olympic grip for front squats, though only up to 140kg, had to use straps after that as elbows were trying to drop.
Farmers all moved well, though pick up was a little slow on the 130kg set, not a huge surprise given the amount of squats id done yesterday and today. Farmers with fat gripz may be my new favourite grip exercise, goal is to get to the stage where i can put the fat gripz on the 110 farmers handles instead of having to bring out the baby farmers.
Bw hangs were a nice change, forearms were pumped after the final set.

Light session on the cards for tomorrow, and probably some stretching and foam rolling this evening.

A decent session tonight, log is still unpleasant on the shoulder at the very top of the lift, but otherwise everything else was comfortable enough.
Tyre flip is improving, a few of tonights reps were painfully close to going over in one motion, should hopefully manage this before much longer.

Very pleased with tonights session. Incline press felt very heavy to statt with, but got easier as the sets progressed, the last set of 120 was done with greatly extended pauses and was still easy, so added a little extra for final set.
Overhead was a bit uncomfortable on the shoulder at the very top of the movement, basically it appears i can lock out, but cant push my head through.
Started suffering mid way through front squats, the individual sets werent that difficult, but the total volume up to that point was starting to wear me down.
Stiff legged deads were a cake walk, the sets on 210 were effortless so added a little extra weight for the last three sets.

Planning paused squats and deadlifts tomorrow, as well as another session with the physio.

Pretty mediocre session today, other than squats everything felt heavy. Wasnt a huge surprise really, between yesterdays session and my physio i was pretty beat up.
First time doing full cleans on log since hurting the shoulder, easy enough. I debated putting a bit of weight on and trying some presses with leg drive, but not confident enough in the shoulder yet.

Planning a bro session tomorrow, bench press, arms and not much else.
