Grin

When I read your first post I thought 'He's probably just being harsh on himself, and is actually much better than he thinks'.

Now I think you were right Grin

I think I'll start using trainingpeaks once I work out how to get this data uploaded.

Have you any experience with Golden Cheetah?

Cant say I have mate, although I think someone mentioned it on here before, probably you! I'll look into it.

Didn't manage to get up to the club for any more training last week - so only commuting. Had our work christmas do Friday and then had to ref the seniors rugby fixture early sat morning after a baltic 13 mile commute. That was fun.

Ouch. Our Christmas do's Tuesday, and a leaving bash Thursday. I may well drive to both, though.

OJ, can you see yourself reffing at big ass rugby matches in the future ? could that happen ?

weather has been worse than awful recently.

I do enjoy riffing, and I try to be as good at it as I can be. I'd say I'm as good as a lot of the society refs that get paid to do our first team games, but that's as much a reflection of them than me.

Maybe one day I'll do my badges and ref a higher level, but it's another drain on my already limited free time so I don't know how likely it actually is!

I've never used Golden Cheetah - it's seems to be completely aimed at cyclists especially using power and spoils you with pages of figures (if you understand what it all means) It is however completely free so I've just started to put cycle sessions in there.

I like the look of Training Peaks but have always been put off by the price. However as it is now possible to automatically update Training Peaks from Garmin I have set up a link so that happens and yesterday copied 1296 past training sessions from Garmin into Training Peaks and so at least I've got all my info in there if I decide to give it a try in the future (a may give the free trial premium trial a go as you really can't do very much in the basic edition)

Going to try and get this up and running again, at least for a month or so, as I need to keep a decent record of my training to keep me honest.

Converting the wattbike files to make them easy to track is a hassle I cannot be bothered with at the moment and this seems as good a place as any.

I've built a really decent base, but I have ZERO speed or explosive power, so that's the focus, working mostly in 15 second, 1 minute and 5 minute intervals. Key focus is also on getting my cadence back up. When I'm 'fast' it's around 100-105rpm, but I have no power at that range at the moment.

Wednesday 12th August

-W/U
-15 second sprint, 3 minutes recovery x 5
-1 minute sprint, 5 minutes recovery x 5 (405,448,491,473,450)
-5 minute effort, 5 minute recovery x 2 (315,314)

Finished off with 45 miles out on the road. This was just a test workout to see where I'm at, work out resistance levels etc. I am the perfect example of specificity in your training leading to specific results. I can turn a big gear slowly, and for hours. Anything else? f**king useless.

Friday 14th August

-W/U
-15 second sprint, 3 mins recovery x 5 (886,842,840,800,800)
-10 minutes at &rt;100rpm (202)
-1 minute sprint, 5 mins recovery x 5 (462,464,469,499,499)
-5 minute effort, 5 minute recovery x 5 (304,310,327,299,323)

Short term goals are &rt;500 for the minutes, &rt;340 for the 5 minutes.

Messed around with different hand positions for the 5 minute efforts. The 299 was on the TT bars with a bit of a sprint to get the number up as I was way down.

Most workouts will be a variation of this or tempo/threshold work, with hills and miles out on the road.

Interesting - so you've optimised yourself for climbing?

Pretty much. Strength and endurance focused.

I wouldn't call myself a climber per se, as my weight is far too high. I've kind of optimised myself for climbing as a heavier chap.

In essence, I'm pretty s**t Happy

Monday 17th August

-W/U
-15 second sprint, 3 mins recovery x 5
-10 minutes at 100rpm (202)
-1 minute sprint, 5 mins recovery x 5 (452,456,454,452,475)
-5 minute effort, 5 minute recovery x 5 (305,308,307,316,352)

Really heavy weekend resulted in a two day hangover. Wasn't feeling great on the bike at all so just kept everything well under control. Will push harder later in the week when I'm a bit more human again.

Tuesday 19th August

-W/U
-1 minute sprint, 5 mins recovery x 10 (506,504,504,509,508,507,558,512,506,541)
-5 minute effort, 5 minute recovery x 5 (313,311,313,344,312)

Much much better on the 1 minute efforts. First 5 were done at around 115rpm and the next 5 in a bigger gear. New target of 5 sets at 550.

Kept the 5 minute efforts conservative and worked on a few things, cadence on the first two and last and climbing on the 3rd and 4th.

Felt strong. Considering that's only actually 35 minutes of proper effort, it was bloody hard work.

Did you naturally start off preferring a higher cadence or have you had to work at it?

Almost everything I see recommends higher cadence, but recently I came across some comments from on of GB s best 100mile time trialists who says he aims for just 70 to 75 (with a 65t chainring). Is it a personal thing or more specific to certain types of riding?
