I've seen this topic pop up in a few threads here and there. Interested to know how many of you use Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs or other painkillers in training on a regular/semi-regular basis and what you find it does for you.

I never really came across it before until I started trying to weightlift, but have seen and heard people popping 400mg on a fairly regular basis since then. I've got various niggles and stuff going on and every now and then take some ibuprofen prior to training and it really does help. The guilt kills me though and I try to limit this as much as I can.

I was sat in a meeting a couple of weeks ago (bored to tears really, probably shouldn't say that) listening to some pretty well respected Sports Nutritionists talking about antioxidants and other anti-inflammatory nutrients, supplements, etc. Predictably, (this is a bit old-hat in the sports nutrition world) the conversation got onto the topic that inhibiting inflammation is not good from an exercise adaptation point of view and could impede progress over time (pretty sure I know some big n nasty people that take tons of the stuff, mind!).

Anyway, regardless of whether doing so could/would inhibit adaptation, I suppose there are real concerns with consistent use of these drugs with training. Interested to know if anyone does use them and what they find.

I don't know if you're new to lifting but if taking 400mg ibuprofen semi regularay sends you on a guilt trip then Powerlifting/strongman/olympic lifting might not be for you

When my knees were real bad I was taking 400mg every 3hrs, every day for about 3 months

Now I just take pre training

Ha ha, you f****s.

Just seen a few people destroy their knees with weightlifting who basically took 400mg prior to training as standard. Also know another guy who had gastrointestinal bleeding from using it. I try not to use it because I have asthma.

Don't give me that unit-me-lad, you're on borrowed time and you know it

Cool. Cheers. I only ever use it pre-training and try not to use it more than 1 x per week, max.

The difference it makes to my mobility and how I feel is daft.

The fact that you just used 23 as an age-related benchmark makes me hate you even more than I did before.

I am along the same lines as you mate, I take it very occasionally but the guilt also gets to me a lot... I'm also bought by the whole inflammation inhibits recovery process so try to limit as much as I can even when I am in pain.

Over at Cal Strength though the team would regularly smash an awful lot of Ibuprofen as if it were smarties which blew my mind. No one even batted an eye lid until relatively close to competition they would "cut down". Crazy.

They're a short term fix for long term problems I think.

No offence meant here, just assumed you were new to it all. I'm still quite new to the forum and learning who's who

Bit of a noobish question, but here goes. People often say that inhibiting the inflammatory response is detrimental (as you mention in your post) for the body long-term and is a good reason for not taking ibuprofen/NSAIDs at all. Nobody ever demonises icing though; isn't it essentially doing the same thing in reducing inflammation?

Legit point. I don't ice either though.
