450+ yoke are ridiculous. imagine them putting 300kg race over 60m (turn at 30m) do you think this would be good to watch? personally i do.

Yes!
It would be fast and get tough at the end, far more dramatic

I'd prefer 400kg for 30m, I suppose that is the problem though, everyone wants to see different things from strongman and the hard thing is striking a balance to try and please everyone. I think that whatever weights/distances people choose someone won't like it.

I like a 400kg for 30 occasionally too, but only if the field are of a level where they can move quickly with it
Not if 2 guys waddle to the finish and the rest do a hundred pick ups to go 5m

Jc - your misunderstanding me a bit. I'm not saying open level competitors wouldnt piss 107.5kg logs, i'm saying lower the open weights to around about inter level so it's basically a normal strongman comp. Then the stronger guys do the bigger shows, arnold qualifiers, uk qualifiers, pro events etc Also nothing wrong with max events, dont have to all be repping.
Martin - you are strong when you get rep 180kg deadlifts though mate, most gym goers dont ever come near that for one.
Graham - Much more exciting imo, same for farmers. Watching you run with 400kg is exciting but watching most stumble along certainly isnt!

No
Being the strongest in a gym where nobody is strong does not make you strong
To know if you are strong compare yourself to strong people
No matter who you are, if you can't oh 100kgs you aren't strong (open weight guy) enough to do a strongman comp because you aren't strong

I agree, surely a 130 log is fine for a qualifier, top guys will still be getting 8-10, 100kg log is like a toy to guys with 140+ maxes.

I have been to see far too many open comps, qualifers as well, where "130 log" and strong guys are doing 1-2 and half the field no rep

Yup. Forget set weights. Most of the field should be getting good reps, set the weight so they do
adamdutton04/09/13 @ 17:19
Personally as someone just starting in strongman I think there should be more strongman competitions overall, and definitely more inter comps, at the moment I'd do ok in novice but would struggle on the open comps, so this means I may have to not compete for a year and try build my strength up to open level, but if there were more inter comps I can still compete while getting stronger, without having to compete in novice comps when I'm above that level, (which as said puts new comers off) or without entering opens and not being able to finish off an event.
RickF04/09/13 @ 17:23
I have to agree with a few of the people above, it's strongman, if your not strong, don't do it.
I don't really get the concept of 'noivice' comps. As its strongman, not strong but only to a point man.
First timers
Opens
Qualifiers and up.

Brownbear - exactly, and its embarassing/off putting for competitor and s**t to watch for the spectator.
Martin - your thinking like a strongman competitor, not someone wanting to become a strongman competitor. Do i think of a 180kg deadlift as strong? Of course not, i have 30 rep'd that and i consider myself a piss weak deadlifter, but for people wanting to get into the sport, it's not so light. If you put 220kg rep deadlifts and 300kg yokes in for novice comps your gonna make sure the sport stays small.
