Thought this would make a good discussion as we are all trying to help this sport progress ...

Mike Neale asked me about what id pay to enter BSM u80kg ... Bare in mind he is going to try get VOS a years sponsorship to winner great events and venue and trophies ... I said up to £80... He was thinking 15!

Now after going to America I spoke to alot of strongmen from yank land. Average fee per national comp is 110 dollars an that's what I had to pay to compete aswell ... Makes me wonder are we being cheap? Is this the reason they have such better kit venues and spectators ? I think so ........

Now obviously a backyard comp no mc, scoring on a scrap piece of paper and a £5 trophy you won't pay that will you but after making a £200 loss on northerns it makes me think I don't want to do that again but if we had the expenses to cover that and more it would be amazing and more o an incentive to run competitions .

Thoughts? Do the yanks charge to much or us to less? Somewhere in the middle !?

Somewhere in the middle would be best I think.
I would pay 40-50 quid for a quality comp.

What would change in a comp if the fees were higher?

if competitiors are paying 50 for a comp, there should be a new yoke and/or set of farmers or new log in the comp and that goes to the winner as a prize

Better equipment? Better prizes? Get it all filmed?
Lots of possibilities with more money.

if you're going to come lower down though and not going to win something, would u pay more so whoever comes 1st gets £200 instead of some s**tty weight gainer?

Fair point. Higher entry price could put off lower level competitors. Surely that wouldn't be an issue at nationals though?

Lets use mike as an example

20 guy at BSM .. 15 quid each .. £300 total ... Venue £200 .. Van hire to pick kit up £70 ... Rest is basically out of mikes pocket ....

20 guys at £50 £1000 budget .. 200 venue £200 VOS van hire 70 (guessing vos price) £150 trophies £400 for kit which can be used in fitre and for promotion etc kit . No financial worry to mike ...

Promoters shouldn't have to worry about money running a comp

People seem to moan if it looks like the promoter/venue is going to make any money out of putting on any comps, such as the Euro qualifier at PSF and the London qualifier coming up at Bulldog Beattie's gym.

Personally i think by making it more attractive to promoters (making a few £) they are going to put in more effort into sourcing better equipment, sponsers, venues etc.

Id be happy to pay upto £50 to enter a comp that was going to be set up in a professional way.

Or you could look at it as Wouk you pay more to be in a more professional setting . More professional = more exposure more crowds more people care .. It's filmed great kit quality easy to follow scoring

Great day out

Any of them would be good, Id be willing to pay more for something like that. £40-£50 for a comp with some prize money and a professional looking video seems reasonable.

I agree with what your saying but I can't help thinking about 2 things

1. I believe in Shetland you compete for free and the comps make a profit that goes to charity and is reinvested in the gym, a handsome profit too I believe

2. I know myself and a few others who have turned down the oppertunity to down a powerlifting comp recently because it costs so much money for a one off, with member ship singlet comp entry etc

It's a tough one. I think the suggestion of the 1st prize been a log or a dumbell from the comp though, that seems neat

oh sorry and sorry mike!

ps mike 15£ isnt enough!

50 is too much though unless hes going to buy new kit......

having said that, it costs £40 to do a powerlifting comp and £40 annual fees and that's well boring
