At these comps, you need an objective eye to gauge how much is left in the tank. Some guys on here NEVER choose a weight themselves and don't do too badly on it. The 95 was easy; there was quite a bit more in the tank. 97.5 is not a milestone, 100 is. The class was already won. Suspect the failure was lack of belief rather than lack of strength.

Couldn't disagree more! 2.5 kilo jumps are more realistic and achievable than 5 kilo ones, progress can be more constant and more achievable. You can't force yourself to get stronger, but you can induce yourself to jump too much and reach failure. If you haven't got 1.25s, fair enough, needs must and all that, but if you've got them, use them. 1.25 per side increase per fortnight = 30 kilos improvement in 6 months. Bet you'd take that?

I know in my case if I had the option to add 2.5kg I would've (for exactly the reasons you cite!), the fact I couldn't do so forced me to add 5kg to an exercise, therefore I handled heavier weights than I otherwise would have done.

Without taking over Scott's thread, surely it's about what brings about the most improvement? And smaller steps are more manageable. The reason I've bitten on this is that I've been trying to encourage Scott to take 2.5 steps but he's ignored that advice and gone for 5s and as a result, imo, hasn't moved up as much as he would have otherwise. I don't think strength levels are the issue either. When I started back in January after a fairly long layoff I upped the weight 1.25 per side per week and put 20 kilos on my 1RM in less than three months.
