I also took my new 50KG plates for a ride in yesterday's session.

I had forgotten how hard 50KG plates are to handle. If/ when I decide to detrain in order to be less fat, they will be pretty difficult for me to use.

Thought about forking out for a safety squat bar? As long as you brace and keep your knees out, they more or less force you into a near perfect squat form. My personal opinion is that this would be very good for you.

Sounds interesting. Knew they were good (safe) to squat with, but didn't realise they also helped form.

Thinking more about my squatting I suspect that the problems are likely to be linked to the lower back injury I had last year. (Might have been an SI joint thing). Lower back still gets irritated sometimes which it never did before that episode. I think I may have tight/ spasming muscles which could be affecting my movement.

Safety squats are odd. The weight tries to push you forward, and because of that you are forced to push back against it, which makes you squat in quite an upright position. I am much more upright on a safety squat that on my low bar squat. They also work your back quite a lot. They do take a bit of getting used to, but they are effective.

I haven't a lot of experience with them really. I am going to do them exclusively for the next too months, because I have some tendon pain in my elbow.

Today

Bodyweight 81.9

Squats

No weight 10 ok (60) 8 ok (80) 5 good, 5 good, 5 good (100) 2 good (120) 1 OK +belt (135) 1 ok depth not sure, 1 better & strong

Squatting much more positive. Technique felt ok on the 80's. Not trying to hit the side bars is making the difference.

Bench (60) 12 snappy (80) 3 fast (102.5) 5 good,

10 min break for sausages mashed potato and 1 argument with a small child

(102.5) 5 good, 5 v. hard, 5 v. hard, 5 v. hard

(115) 1 hard but good - slight butt lift

Military press (42.5) 10 easy, 10 hard, 9 v. hard

1RM with a minimal warm-up (ie. without doing 25reps at 102.5 first) should be 117.5-120.
I'm going to make this the last week of 5x5 as the number of reps involved is now holding me back from doing bigger weights at the end of the session. Will aim for a week or two of doing 3 heavier sets, aiming for 3x5 with one or two singles.

Child no. 2 is now probably only days away. Child no.1 is also being tricky. The s**t is about to hit the fan and no doubt much joy will also ensue.

Good luck with the child. I'm sure the sleep deprivation will mess training up for a while. It's all worth it though.

Feeling very tired. Had a few days of megastress. (end of quarter, child no.1 trying to rule the house & general commuter tiredness)

Deadlifts

(60) 20 OK (90) 8 tired (125) 2 ok switch to over/under (150) 1 heavy & tired

+belt (165) 2 very heavy, nearly passed out, 2 better but very hard

Didn't want to risk an injury just for 1 extra rep. Plan was for 2 sets of 4.

Pullups 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 1

E-Z Curls (45) 6 strong, 5 v. hard, 5 hard

Pleased with how strong the curls felt

Monday 4th July

Bodyweight 94KG. -Oh dear. Big BBQ and some whisky and beers at the weekend.

Squats

Just bodyweight (ie. no weight) x10, x10

(60) 8 good (80) 5 good (100) 3 good (125) 1 good (140) 1 OK, 1 better - got a video of the 2nd and possibly just about made depth

Looks like I can squat again. Lots of warming up, no leaning forward, pushing knees out and moderate weight seems to be the way.

Bench

(60) 10 snappy! (85) 2 fast (105) 5 bit s**t, 4 better, 4 good

(117.5) 1 very comfortable :-)

Military Press (42.5) 10 easy, 10 easy, 10 hard but good

Baby no.2 will probably arrive in the next 1-2 days. This may be my last post for a while, lol.
If I had known before this session that I would feel as strong as I did, I would definitely have gone for the PB. 120 would have almost certainly been there, which - given that I had already done 13reps at 105 - should mean that 122.5 and possibly even 125 would be there if I was just doing a minimal warm-up to hit one heavy single. Will see what happens in the next week (lifewise) but the good news is that I am now without a doubt as strong as if not stronger than I have ever been on the bench at the moment.

No updates for a few days as baby Oscar was born at 0:52 on Thursday morning.

Wednesday - 07:45

Baby was expected on this day, so I was working from home. Took the opportunity to train early AM, as didn't know when I would be able to train again and this session is only light bench anyway.

Paused close-grip bench

(60) 6 OK (70) 5 OK (90) 4 hard but good, 4 v. hard but strong, 4 v. v. hard (70) 9 v. hard & tired

Decent session given how tired I already was. One more rep done on each set of the 90's.

The session that would normally have been done today (squat & bench) is being delayed until tomorrow as my brother is coming to visit... which means that I have a spotter available - and that I will be doing the bench PB - TOMORROW :-)

Will try to get a video.

12th July

Bodyweight 92.8KG

Squat

(no weight) 10, 10

(60) 8 good (80) 5 good (100) 3 good (120) 2 good (135) + belt 3 hard but good - was meant to be 5 but didn't want to push too hard as was planning to attempt a bench PB.

Bench (60) 9 (85) 2 fast (105) 1 good (115) with hand-off: x1 good (125) 1 hard but good. PB (127.5) Fail a few inches above chest. Prob still wouldn't have got it even if I had gone straight to this after 115, but at least it didn't crush me.

Military Press (50) 6 good, 6 good, 5 hard

This PB was a long time coming. 125KG is 275lbs. I guess I should be chasing 300lbs now. Also pleased to manage this just after the arrival of he boyby. Videos coming later.

Bodyweight 92.8 - Pleased as this is actually about 5KG lighter than I was when I did my previous best benching.

125 KG X1 PB

Nice benching and some nice squatting too it seems. 125 kg bench is respectable.

Your choice of lifting clothing is top notch. I am glad that I'm not the only one who hasn't taken to wearing skin tight lycra. Old clothes from the 1980's covered in baby sick. That's were its at.
