No thread for this so far so figured I'd start one. I'm going to make this my first PL competition! I have my BWLA registration form sitting here next to my cheque book and my flights almost sorted, just now got to figure out what the commands are and whether or not I need this:-

http://www.pullum-sports.co.uk/clothing-and-shoes/powerlifting...

I'm assuming I can wear my baseball boots for deadlifts, but what about socks? Do I need a certain kind?

Anyhoo, looks like Joni's going to be there so at least that's someone I can look forward to saying hello to!

Ummm I'm nervous already! Tongue

EDIT: changed date on thread title and also can't go anymore Unhappy

Nice one mate. I will deffo be there atleast as a spectator. You need long socks for deadlifting, so any kind of football socks that come upto the bottom of the knee. Lookin forward to it.

i have got some good footware for deadlifting - im size 8 , nice and flat !!

but anything flat will do !!

i'll be there to cheer you on mate !!

there is a chance i will compete but i need to spend a couple of months training befor i decide where my strength is at !!

all the commands are easy , when the refs happy with your starting position in the squat he says 'squat' and when hes happy you have finished he says rack ...

same sort of thing with the benchpress , just a 'press' command when the bar is still on your chest

im sortove second guiessing these as i dont know them for certain

Phew, that's cheered me up knowing they'll be a few familiar faces there. Thanks for the commands Boar. I'm a size 9-10 in shoes (wide feet) so perhaps I need to stick to my fairly low and flat baseball boots unless I buy some deadlifting shoes before the time. I've got my squat shoes ready though! Dunno about looking good in a leotard... got to say I never intended to find out until now.

I'm not going to decide on this one for a while yet, but if I don't compete I will definitely there to watch and support!

You will need a BAWLA approved leotard, plain round-necked T-shirt, long socks and sports shoes of some type. Try to make sure that none of your stuff has none-accepted logos on. Inzer, addidas, metal, Titan etc. (plus some others) are OK.

We ask the refs to be as accomodating as possible with first timers, but it is a good idea to start training with the commands if you can.

Squat;- you get a start command after you have set up. After you have squatted it wait for the rack command.

Bench;- start command - then pause on your chest until the press command - bench it, then wait for the rack command

DL;- start whenever you are ready, but wait for the down command (don't let go of it until it is on the floor)

Don't be shy of asking for help on the day; if you need advice about when to warm up, what bids to put in etc. we can sort all of that out.

If you want a really easy start to your competitive career, why not consider the unequipped bench press?

No v-necks?

I have heard a rumour that boxer shorts and other legged underwear are not allowed. Is this so?

There is a standard in the IPF rulebook for what your underwear must be i think its just "a commercially availalable non supportive type, not boxer shorts" which is to exclude you using the inzer groove briefs.

Gold thongs are permissible. In fact, I think any colour is allowed, but anyone with any taste will of course want to match the leotard.Tongue
