Assistance work...pssh. :P I keep meaning to do more but it never happens lol.

Some quite big news: I got an invite to the BPC British Championships. I now have 7 training weeks left, let the fun begin! This means I will be back in knee wraps and my suit pretty soon.

Tuesday 5/5/09 at The Sugden Sports Centre, Manchester

Squat:
60kg x 5
90kg x 5
120kg x 5
140kg x 5
160kg x 3
160kg x 3

Bench:
50kg x 5
60kg x 5
70kg x 5
75kg x 3
75kg x 3
75kg x 3

-----------------
Im NEVER squatting from the squat rack at the Sugden again, always the power rack. It is either too low or too high meaning the squat is damn hard from the beggining. The second set was from the power rack and felt much better. Got some solid benching in.

Thursday 7/5/09 at The Sugden Sports Centre, Manchester

Deadlift:
70kg x 5
100kg x 5
125kg x 5
145kg x 5
155kg x 5

Bench:
50kg x 5
60kg x 5
70kg x 5
75kg x 3
80kg x F

Also tried some military press but my form is so bad on that it is barely worth mentioning.

----------------------
Another mixed session. Deadlift went really well, even if I did forget what weight I was going for and so slightly messed up the warm up weights. Bench was a realy dissapointment. I think in future I will bench then deadlift as my bench needs much more work.

THE ROAD TO BOURNEMOUTH

STARTS HERE!

I have seven weeks of training plus one weeks rest before the BPC Brits. Im so excited, the hard work really starts now.

Here is my current plan:
Monday - Knee wraps squat, bench
Wednesday - Suited squat, deadlift
Friday - Bench, possibly deadlift if I dont get time on my Wednesday session

I will be going for 3 reps for the first 4 weeks on knee wrap squat then three weeks of 2 reps, possibly going light in the final week.
Suited squat will be four weeks of 2 reps then 3 weeks of singles.
On deadlift I will be doing 3 reps for the first 4 weeks then three weeks of 2 reps.
Bench will be one max effort day, one volume day for the first four weeks then one max effort day one comp bench day.

Monday 11/5/09 at The Sugden Sports Centre, Manchester

Squat:
70kg x 5
100kg x 5
125kg x 5*
145kg x 3*
165kg x 3*

*Loose knee wraps

Bench:
50kg x 5
60kg x 3
65kg x 1
72.5kg x 1
77.5kg x 1

------------------
Really happy with this session. Really solid stuff.

Wednesday 13/5/09 at Olympic Sports Gym, Ashton, Manchester

Squat:
70kg x 5*
100kg x 3*
130kg x 3**
160kg x 2**
180kg x 2**

*Knee wraps, suit rolled down, straps down
**Knee wraps, suit rolled up, straps down

Deadlift:
70kg x 5
100kg x 5
125kg x 5
150kg x 5
170kg x 3 - 3 rep PB

--------------------
MrSmall convinced me to pop along to Cleggys gym. We got there via a lift from Joni and after slotting nicely back into my suit I set about squatting. It went pretty well considering it was my first session back in the suit. I had the privelege of Gaz Bolton (sp? Appologies!) checking my depth for me on my final two sets. He judged both sets to be high but as I thought the second rep on both sets was much closer than the first. Once I get the confidence and groove back for walking out suited weights with low bar I will be sorted. Deadlift went well, especially considering I only planned on doing 160kg x 3! 170kg felt easy and Im very confident of trippling 400lbs and then pulling 500lbs at the Brits. I have a video of this set which I will post up later.

P.S. Mark, you have shed loads of strongman equipment, do a favour for us powerlifters and purchase a monolift! :P Grin

My deadlift from Wednesday, feat. The vocal work of Mr. Small:

Saturday 17/5/09 at The Sugden Sports Centre, Manchester

Bench:
60kg x 5
65kg x 5
70kg x 3
75kg x 2
80kg x 2 - 2 rep PB

Then a whole lot of not much.

-----------------------
Was happy to get a bench pb. Gym was too packed to get near any assistance work before the place shut since I got there pretty late. The 80kg set felt pretty nice though which is promising.

yea they were nice and fast mate !!

my personal preference is not to stand shin to bar befor going down , i find a little extra room allows the knees to come thru a little and the back to be flattened out , but its horses for courses !!

the deadlift bars they use (as you know) at BPC events are great ,so take the oppertunity to GO MENTAL and mabie 2nd lift PB , 3rd attempt ..... ANOTHER PB !!!Grin

Cheers Boar! I think im still finding my ideal deadlift form, I will get there one day!

BPC Deadlift bars do kick ass. turbokid, the bars they use in BPC for the deadlift are thin and have great knerls (sp) so you can get a really good grip on them. Its like your hands and the bar have corresponding velcro on them. They also have some 'whip' in them which makes it easier to get off the floor, useful for me since thats often where I fail (not that I fail deadlifts very often Grin )

Tuesday 19/5/09 at The Sugden Sports Centre, Manchester

Squat:
70kg x 5
110kg x 5
130kg x 5
150kg x 5
170kg x 3

Bench:
60kg x 5
67.5kg x 3
75kg x 3
82.5kg x 1

-----------------
Solid stuff, im now fast approaching the numbers I hit before my last comp so I should hit some new ones soon then nail some solid pbs at the Brits!

Thursday 21/5/09 at The Sugden Sports Centre, Manchester

Squat:
70kg x 5
120kg x 3
140kg x 3
160kg x 3
180kg x 2

---------------------
A really short session because I was short on time but Im happy with it. I didn't have anyone checking but I think my depth was much better than last week which is good. The walkout felt better as well.

Do start doing some assistance - its probably the reason why you have such a weak bench. Get on the dipping bar with weight, do narrow grip benching, boards and a bit of shoulder work - its not hard to work and and you're a bright boy. You are limiting your progression with your current training.

The main comment I'd make regards your posterior chain is that you need to incorporate either Good mornings, straight leg deadlifts or romainian deadlifts into your programme - big back squats are generated by big strong hammys, not quads.

Have you got briefs under your suit? If not, get some Titan single ply dual quads -it'll put 20kgs on your suited squat.

As your a student I really shouldn't invite you up to Catts but if you have a wash and cut your hair, you could consider popping up on a Tuesday for one of the now legendary squat and deadlift sessions.
