the UK's leading expert in bio mechanics Member 1973, 7379 posts | I've done a bad thing today... Monday 23/06/2014 Low bar 60kg x 3 80kg x 3 100kg x 3 120kg x 3 130kg x 3 140kg x 1 150kg x 1 160kg x 1 Bench 60kg x 5 80kg x 5 100kg x 5 120kg x 5 Pull ups x 10 So. I did it. After months and months of debilitating knee pain I caved. Due to ankle range allowing way too much dorsiflexion, scar tissue in quads, tight adductors and numerous other contributary factors high bar is ruining my knees. The main thing I need to do is get tib/fib more vertical. So low bar would be ideal. But due to the repair in my shoulder it was proving painful even with an empty bar. So some jiggery pokery today to get it as comfy as it was likely to be and off I went. It felt good. Oh so good. Dirty and bad, but good. No pain at all during the lift, and went up to 160kg (which I failed miserably 3 times last week) with more in the tank. 170kg is there, and with a few weeks of low bar, maybe a little more. Which based on my deadlift is more like it should be. So I now have some belief at least I can get it up to 190 odd in order to qualify for the British. I may even try the next session in plimsoles... But what about the weightlifting I hear you cry? Well, FSq hurts a lot less as my torso and tib/fib are a lot more vertical, and I'm hoping that without the constant aggravation from high bar this will be diminish to no pain at all. I can then focus on FSq as my main weightlifting assistance. Time will tell. As for those who say you need to high bar squat to weightlift, I say I front squatted 205kg when I solely low bar back squatted (I only did FSq when I wanted to set a new PB ) so should be fine... I realise a speculative ramble like this makes me seem a little CarpetSavvy, but I like a ramble

When you are doing 150+ in the clean then it will be a different matter maybe but I really don't think you personally need to be too fussed about those mad upright back/front squat movements for quite a while.

the UK's leading expert in bio mechanics Member 1973, 7379 posts | Oh, and forgot to say, popped down to the Avon for a couple of hours last night and had a few fish including a 7lb barbel and a 5lb chub. So I reckon I'm good for about 300 x 10 touch and go deadlift now.
