» Log/overhead pressing (Go to post)20-08-2009 @ 16:04
Cheers guys. Out of interest, what sort of weight do you guys press overhead? (bar and log) I seem to be at a similar strength level to both of you in Squat (170) Bench (137.5 I think, 140 next 1RM attempt hopefully) and deadlift (220) so it would be interesting to compare overhead lifts too. Also, would you recommend push presses, strict, or some of each? It seems to me that even novice strongman comps require a 100kg overhead to be competitive.

I'm s**t at overhead pressing, not done much lately but now I need to improve. I'm doing the Prestons Strongest Man in about 3 weeks and would like to be able to get 1 rep on the 95kg log. I've tried log pressing once and manage to get 85kg for 1, but it was a bit hit and miss. I failed some lighter weights, then when I got the technique better I got them, and then moved on to 85kg which I got once. Do you think it's realistic to be able to improve by 10kg in such a short space of time? I've made my own log (12" diameter) which is 70kg, but I can't add weight to it yet as I haven't got hold of any 1" bar yet. Is it worth just trying to improve my technique with my log and also train push press in the gym? Even if I can't get the log in 3 weeks I still need to improve my overhead strength and technique, so what would you strongman guys recommend? Or is it as simple as 'just press overhead more'!?
Cheers.

Anyone know if/when/where this is going to be televised? the 07 comp is being shown on Bravo at the moment, anyone else think that Gary Taylor doesn't make quite the best comentator?

Oh balls. Looks like I'm gonna be well outclassed for this comp. I'll just try not to come last!

Hi Jason, sorry, my mistake re. postcode.

Guys, the Chorleys Strongest Man comp that Jason ran the other week was excellent. Really well organised. This should be good!

Yeah, I thought it was gonna be a 100kg yoke press this time, looks like Jason has re-thunk (re-thinked?) it a bit. Good, I'd rather fail a 95kg log than a 100kg yoke press.

Where are you located mate - local to preston?

Someone I know may be interested. I shall find out.

I'd have it but I only just get in my old 52 so I think it'd be way too small for me sadly.

Lol, it's in our gyms car park...

Jason who is organising it also ran one in Chorley a few weeks back and it was a good day. Light enough for non- strongmen to enter and have a go.

Couple of the lads I train with are doing it (Pete above!)

Martin, get Jon to agree to store the yoke that Ben F is selling in the general forum, then we can all chip in! :-)

It's a bit heavier than the Chorley one though, and no deadlifts! pah

Best wait for Jason to confirm that though, I may be 100% wrong yet!

I think you may have a Preston postcode to enter, not 100% though.

f**k, I was hoping no one off here would find out about it! ha ha

It's a shame you have to sell this bit of kit Ben. If I had somewhere to store it I'd dig deep and make an offer, but I'm afraid I haven't. May meet you some day at HHH, I've normally only make it on the odd Friday though. I could do with a bit of strongman inspiration from someone a similar size. How on earth you can deadlift 290 is mind boggling to me!!Confused

Sounds like a great competition! I didn't realise how heavy the under 105's events were. Well done everyone who competed. And that's your first strongman comp Chris? Awesome result!
Whens the BSM on that has been mentioned in this thread? I thought it was cancelled this year?
Cheers
