Cuddles said: Its not an example of calories not being equal, calories ARE equal. The difference is what your body does or has to do to use them. A calorie is a unit of measurement. Saying they are not equal is like saying that all kilos are not equal. Good point. Pretty much end of thread.

Joni said:different foods require different levels of effort from your body to process, and different levels of it is wasted and energy not absorbed at all. That makes different foods unequal. Cardio bunnies know this and nail easily absorbable carb based meals both in the carb loading and even more processed and easily digested carb energy sources during things like marathon/triathlon and so on. Higher percentage of the calories in the food will be utilised by the body with lowest possible energy expenditure during the digestion. Hence, higher fat content foods with similar amount of calories is not the same than higher carb content of similar calories (usually, unless high in fibre or something). I'm sure some wise academic has made this all into a cool formula. Yeah. Protein has a higher thermic effect than fats or carbs as far as I know. I reckon if you ate just whole food sources of protein and celery you'd be ripped in no time! Actually, celery is another good example of calories not being equal...you burn more than you take in whilst eating it. (ok, not a good example, just an example)

What did you weigh at the Dragons comp Pagan, you looked pretty lean there. Surely cutting to 80kg would be going too far?

JC said:as olly eludes too, whether you get 4000kcal from burgers or 4000 from chicken and rice, you will put on the same amount of weight if in kcal excess But the composition of the added weight will probably be different. ie. more fat gain from the burgers.

Tannhauser said:Personally, I'm all for remembering the sacrifices of those in WWII or other conflicts. I'm not sure why that means that you're obliged to do it at the same time that everybody else does it, why that means you're a bad person and deserve to be beaten up if you don't. Are most people actually showing any respect by observing the silence? Are they thinking of the illustrious dead while keeping quiet? Or are they just making sure that they don't fall foul of their peer group? Looking at some of the overreactions on this thread, woe betide anyone who doesn't conform. And even if they don't keep quiet because they genuinely just don't care, so what? What business is that of anyone else's? There are no shortage of tragedies to remember and be affected by, but it makes no sense to try to bully everyone else into feeling the same. For example, why a minute's silence for 9/11, and not for 1,000,000 killed under Suharto, or Rwanda, or in the Boxing Day Tsunami? Grief and remembrance are personal things that you can't impose on others. There's an irony in pointing out that people died to protect freedom, but at the same time suggesting we brutalise others when they exercise that freedom. There are plenty of ways in which somebody can show support for the existing armed forces, if that's what you choose. Keeping quiet for two minutes is only one of them. Nice post.

I thought hats were compulsory if you are ginger, at all times, including in the gym. Normal people however, should not wear hats in the gym.

Balls! I've managed to avoid the results and was really looking forward to watching it at Xmas. I didn't realise Channel 5 had ditched WSM as well as BSM. It should always be on over Xmas, its a tradition! |
