» Stupid Pre-Lift Rituals (Go to post)26-02-2008 @ 11:14
As a relatively stumpy lifter I sometimes struggle passing a bench bar to the long-armed Bryn Evans. As a result of this I sometimes end up applying my sack to his forehead at the beginning of the lift. ALthough he denies it, I have noticed that he always performs best after this has occurred. Nowadays it is often enough for me to simply shout at him prior to a lift "Don't make me put the sack on you". We sometimes refer to this practice as Teabagging - although it does not go the whole hog.

Now - WHo's for a centre pass?
» creatine formulations (Go to post)20-02-2008 @ 12:12
A while back, on the creatine post someone posted some information on relative effectivenes of different formulations of creatine. Do any of you have any references for this?

One last one. A hermaphrodite turns up to compete in the north west unequipped bench. Are they entered as a male, a female or what? & how would drug testing and gender testing get round that?

If I had to enter a hermaphrodite I would enter it as a female, - it's only common sense.

But anal sex is never mentioned. Frank could have been a hermaphrodite. Which, of course, would bring a (w)hole new meaning to the expression 'to be frank'...

I do apologise - this clearly makes it OK - so come on ye girls, comne on ye boys and come on ye trannies - come slide down the greasy pole of my depravity.

This posting shows a lack of sensitivity. Did no-one stop to think about the trauma this could cause to anyone who has been anally raped by a talking bear? No! It's not so funny when you think about it, is it? I just hope that none of those guys I shared a cell with in prison are reading this.

ALthough this is a big total, I know for a fact that Dean is capable of significantly more on every lift. I would back him as a good bet for the first IPF Brit to total 1100.
» Another Creatine Question (Go to post)04-02-2008 @ 23:56
One of the properties of creatine is that it is stored in the muscles. It exerts an osmotic effect here, drawing water into the muscles. This is why one of the side effects is weight gain. Long term there is some evidence to suggest that weight gain can occur due to increased protein synthesis in the muscles.

If you come off the water weight will be lost, but so will most of the strength gains.

Since most of the extra weight is stored water, it may be the case that you can afford to dehydrate a little more prior to weigh-in, in order to make the weight. Your best bet is probably to experiment with it.

I have always wanted 'Crazy Diamond' by Pink Floyd, or maybe their 'great gig in the sky'.

My wife wants 'time of my life' from dirty dancing, but I've told her she is getting 'Ding Dong the Witch is Dead'.

I have one nice firm poo a day - wiping is genuinly optional.

my whites stay whiter than white.white.

The unecessary wipe at the end is sometimes known as a 'glory wipe'. I love it when I know I've produced a good clean exit , I call it 'arse candy'.

Yeah yeah, dangerous etc. but did you pass the lift?
» Protein Intake on an average day (Go to post)15-01-2008 @ 12:12
When I looked at the research for this last, there were some studies advocating up to 1.7g of protein per kilo bodyweight per day. There was no evidence that levels above this could be performance enhancing, although this does not necessarily take into account styles of training and other factors, such as supplements or drugs. On the whole, protein deficiency is not much of a problem for powerlifters. I don't know many people that actually monitor their intake.

The belief that protein automatically turns into muscle when you eat it is clearly wrong. I used to know a top competitive bodybuilder who claimed that the more protein he ate the bigger his muscles got. I asked him the obvious question; "why don't you just eat some more then?". His reply was that there was only so much protein you could eat in a day. I found this explanation a little hard to swallow. After all, if I thought it would add to my total I would attempt to eat a full pig. In fact if I was convinced that eating a barrel full of s**t would put 100kg on my total I would be saying "pass the spoon" - a clean spoon of course, I'm not an animal.
» started juicing (Go to post)15-01-2008 @ 01:24
I have the usual juicer dilemma. The juice it makes is great, but I hate to clean it. Fortunately my wife seems to enjoy juicing some stuff from time to time, so I leave it to her. Ginger goes well with many fruits and veggies, but I have not been able to get much out of kale.

As for coffee enemas - is suppose that is OK if you like them, but when you start dunking biscuits you've gone too far.
» HMB (Go to post)11-01-2008 @ 01:29
When I looked at the research for this area a couple of years ago the bottom line seemed to be that there was some evidence that HMB could be performance enhancing in previously untrained individuals when they start an exercise programme. I found no evidence to support benefits for intermediate or advanced trainers.

HMB is a natural metabolite of the amino acid leucine. This is one of the branch-chain amino acids (BCAAs). These have been found to have anti-catabolic properties, and it was thought that the metabolite HMB may be an important part of this mechanism. Before you rush out to buy BCAAs, however, I should point out that the best way of getting these is to consume sufficient protein.

The market place is full of supplements, not based around normal nutrients, that claim to improve performance. It is extremely rare to find any real evidence to aupport these claims. I like to refer to these as 'snake oil supplements' after the ingredient popular with the travelling medicine shows of the the wild west. Unfortunately, all that they are good for is parting the gullible from their money. I fell prey myself as a youngster. I remember chowing down on expensive raw glandulars as a teenager. Raw orchic was my favourite; this was basically freeze-dried bull's bo***cks. Did they work? Did they bo***cks!
