hi guys
been out for a bit, started training now, 2 weeks in and loving it.

however, this year really want to make some progress.

so been thinking about training, ive got a knee injury which im at physio, but thwne thats sorted wudn mind tryin to get to a strongman camp. how strong realisitcally do i need to be to go, i am no where near strong enough to lift anything compared to you guys atm.

was thinking, 2 days weight, up to a camp at weekend.
what would work best, heavy lower body and heavy upper?
or full body on a 4x5 then second day at say 3x8. just routines ive heard about

my exercises i use are

legs- squats, leg raise, leg curl
back- deads, rows(do t-bar or bent over d/bell row), pull down various grips, seated row
chest- dips (utter s**t at doing them, but like them), incline bench
shoulders- push press/military press, shurgs

also thinking of doing some clean and press. or jerk and press.

have a missed out any important exercises?

can i have some advice ont he type of routine to do please guys. spent my year bodybuilding with head in magazines, and so tryin to get rid of that crap and learn some strongman training as thats what i want to do.

cheers

You're in the North right? Manchester way? If so, get down to the Dungeon.

The best advice I can give you. Genuinely.

Near Bolton. I would really advise you do. If you could get to Manc, Im sure the Veganator would be able to offer a lift.

Its a different ball game once you've done the events and you'll understand so much more what it is you're trying to achieve in the gym. Plus these guys will be able to help you more once theyve seen you lift, and failing that, they'll at least take the piss out of you so its win-win reallyGrin

just until knee is right carnt do mobile stuff that much.

Like olly says doing some event training is important. Some guideline weights you would need to compete would be around SQT - 180kg DL - 220kg OH - 100kg but thats not to say you couldnt go and do some event training with lower numbers than that. Ive been using a split like this during the off season. Might be of use if you cant get to train events:

Day 1:

push press/power jerk 4x6/5x5
BB Rows 4x6/5x5

Day 2:

Deadlift 1-3x3-5
Squat 4x6/2x8

Day 3:

standing strict press/DB press 4x6/5x5
Wide grip chins 4x6/5x5

Along with a bit of grip work and cardio that sort of thing would help you get a good base to start training events with. hope that helps!

could deffinatly do with some work then, that is what i feared i am currently no where near them weights.
i feel i may hammer weights to build up my strength so i do have the power, then come into specific events and develop like that. my squat and deads need alot of work.

that split seems good. i tend to do some cardio for about 20mins, with some core work in there.
are the two set/rep markings for one wee one, and next week next?

those sets and reps are just a rough guidline. I just go with how I feel on the day. My sets and reps could be different on any given day but theyre usually one of theses - 3x3, 4x6, 5x5, 4x1, 2x8. dont ask me why those numbers!

I REALLY REALLY would recommend getting a session or two on the equipment sooner rather than later. Think about it, it'd be like training for powerlifting having never squatted, benched or deadlifted. Or training for lemon fresh love without snatching or jerking. You just wouldnt do it. Numbers like Will mentioned are great, as a guide. Nothing more.

You'll learn a lot more about the events and what it is you're trying to achieve in the gym after a few sessions. I also think that training the events will make you a stronger squatter, presser and deadlifter anyway. Seriously, dont wait.

is there a minimum of what the weights are in the strongman camp
ie min weight of the log or whatever else.

ive prob got a month or so till physio finnishs on knee before i push up to doing the events, but at mo i am no where near going for them weights as mentioned

there are some minimums, but most events have a low entry level in training. Boar came to train mainly for cardio and conditioning purposes, so the implements work in many ways.

The hardest minimum weights are the log which starts at 70kg and stone, which starts at 105kg. But leaving those aside there are loads of things to do like farmers, yoke, grip work, thick bar work, medleys and so on. So there is something to everybody for sure.

yeah sorry maybe I wasnt clear enough, those are the kind of numbers you would need to compete. If strongman is what you want to do you could (and should) start training now!

There is a guy called Joni who is an admin on Sugden Barbell I think. He is an ok guy but thinks meat eaters are ruining the eco-system.
