Okays guys, I figured I'd start a journal on here so that I can share my experiences with my hernia. I'm tomorrow I'll be 7 weeks out from getting my op so I'm going to record my training leading up to op, and my recovery; becoming bigger, stronger and faster than ever before!

Quick bit of background info - I've had this hernia for probably 4 or 5 years, non-lifting related... Take it from me guys, if a poo ain't coming; it ain't coming. So I've always had it since I've lifted, it's just gotten worse as I've gotten stronger so I figured I better get it fixed before some serious damage is done. It doesn't affect my training too badly, squats are the worst so I've had to stop squatting high-bar and have replaced them with low-bar "Anderson" squats - to help with my deadlifting.

Hopefully this could become an interesting read for other guys that develope a hernia and are wondering how it will affect training and the like, only time will tell! Some shouts of encouragement would also be greatly appreciated when I'm weak as sh*t after the op haha.

I plan to come back and compete as a 105kg next year, so I've gotta add some serious strength without gaining too much weight. I float between 102-104kg just now.

Current PBs, to give you an idea of where I'm at now:

Bench - 140kg
Squat - 192.kg
Deadlift - 220kg
Str/press - 100kg
P/press - 115kg (Behind the neck)
Log - 92.5kg (One-motioned)
Fr/squat - 145kg

I will start by posting up training sessions from this week, thank you very much for your time.

Monday 18th Feb

Overhead + Triceps:

Dumbell rows - 15kg x 12, 25kg x 10, 35kg x 8

I like doing these before any kind of pressing work, nothing too hectic.

One-motioned log - 45kg x 6, 55kg x 5, 65kg x 3, 75kg x 3, 85kg x 1, 92.5kg x 1

Z press - 80kg x 3, 75kg x 4, 70kg x 5

Close-grip floor press - 85kg x 5, 5, 5 (Felt way too easy, been a while since I've done these, 95kg next week)

Tricep pushdowns - 30kg x 10, 10, 10

Not a bad session, first time training in 5 days. Pretty easy going on the hernia.

Tonight's session - Tuesday 19th Feb

"Squats":

As mentioned above, squats hurt my hernia pretty bad, so I've had to stop doing them for the time being, substituted in "Anderson squats" instead. I set these up in the power rack with the bars just above parallel (think deadlifts) and have the bar low on my traps, descend slowly until a dead-stop on the safety bars and explode up. The idea is these are gonna help my deadlift speed off the floor, which sucks at the moment.

Anderson squats - 60kg x 5, 90kg x 5, 110kg x 3, 120kg x 2, 130kg x 1, 140kg x 3, 150kg x 3, 3, 3, 165kg x 1, 170kg x 1, 180kg x 1

Did not expect to get this heavy with these, the 180kg felt easy so I'm pretty buzzing with that. However, I wobbled a little bit on the descent and tweaked my back a bit!

Front squats - 80kg x 3, 3, 3, 3 (did these light as I'm trying to get used to a clean grip, it's getting easier.)

Stiff-legged deadlifts - Nope. My tweaked back from earlier ended my session here.

Didn't go as planned but hey ho. Got some upper back assistance work on thursday so should be fit for that.

Hya pal I have had my hernia just above my belly button since about 2006 I think , b4 I started heavy training and I have noticed it has gotten worse the last couple of month or so since I have put more weight on , it doesn't hurt as such , I can push it back in abit it's visible from the out side , when I squat I can feel my belt pushing it back in , how long will u be out for after ur op ? Might get mine done after the northen 105 qual , just scared of loosing weight not be able to train look s**t etc etc.

Good luck with ur training up to ur op

A powerlifter I used to train with had a laparoscopic hernia mesh repair and was back squatting 4 weeks after the op. He squatted 290kg a few months after the surgery.

You're pretty much the same script as me, but mine is in the groin area and do get some discomfort. Lots of walking can be quite sore on it. I was worried too about losing size and strength, etc. But i figured im better getting it fixed sooner rather than later when i would have more to lose, complications can be pretty severe too.

As for recovery, i think it's down to the individual. I've read some horror stories where people have been out fo months and months, but i've also read stories of quick recoveries like the one above. I'll just have to play it by ear i guess. Like i said, better doing it now than later. I'll be sure to update this thread with my downtime and recovery, etc.

Stopped updating this as wasn't I really doing anything of any real interest.

Managed to hit a 120kg BTN p/press and finally got my deadlift over 500lbs before my op; those were two goals that I had.

Well it'll be two weeks tomorrow since my operation and I'm still pretty tender around the area. Walking's okay if it's not too far, I feel every god damn bump in the road when I'm driving, and it's pretty sore to get in and out of bed. However, I sneezed today and it didn't nearly kill me like it did last week! So I'm definitely on the mend. Got a bonny 3" scar in the middle of my pubes now Grin

Signed off work for another 3 weeks so I can't see me training before then, I do plan to get in to the gym next week to do some light stuff on the cross trainer - I'm hoping that getting lots of blood around the area will speed up the healing process.

No idea when I'll be able to train heavy, I suspect I'll be doing heavy upper body long before I start squatting and deadlifting again but time will tell.

I'll be back.

3 weeks today since my op and I managed to get in the gym on monday and today.

On Monday I farted about on the bike and cross-trainer for a little while and followed that with some leg raises, which I was very surprised I could do pain-free.

Today I went on the bike again, just for 10mins as the seat was giving me a helluva sore arse, then I did some standing single-legged leg raises, and I think 7 x 10 proper leg raises in the frame.

Did some Karlsen flys afterwards out of pure curiosity - I like them, and they will definitely be used in my training when I can get back to it.

Still a little bit sore at times but what I did today was pain-free. Same again tomorrow, onwards and upwards.

4 weeks since the op and I've been continuing with the bike and leg raise combo, seem to be recovering quite well.

Starting to phase in some weight training too, some light weight, strict, bodybuilding kinda stuff. Gonna train like this for a few weeks, see if any movements hurt and take it from there. Hopefully start adding some weight if all goes well!!

Did shoulders last night - All 3x10, strict form:

Underhand DB rows
Reverse DB flys
Overhead press
Klokov press
DB swings
Seated DB lat raise/ front raise/ press Tri-set

DAT PUMP!!

Today I did some back work, again for 3x10:

Yates rows
Lat Pulldowns
DB rows
Some John Meadows-type row
BB curls

All went really well, no pain at the hernia site or anything. Reckon I could add quite a bit of weight to these next week. Rest day tomorrow, then I'm gonna hit up some chest in a similar fashion Happy

Okay, I'm gonna try and up date this pretty religiously from here on out, training's picking up again, will start to add sets and weights when I'm closer to my original strength... :P

Yesterday - 6/5/13 - Shoulders

DB reverse flys
Strict press
Klokov Press
John Meadows DB swings
Karlsen flys
Delt "Triad"

What an insane pump, I'm enjoying this whole bodybuilding thing again...

Today - 7/5/13 - Squats

Started with lots of foam rolling and a bit of static stretching as per, was feeling good.

Squats - Being very careful, paused at the bottom for a second or so.

Bar x 5
40kg x 5
60kg x 5
70kg x 2
80kg x 1
90kg x 1
100kg x 1!

Leg raises - 3 x 10
Hip Adductor machine/ Leg exts/ Leg curls tri-set - 3 x 12

Delighted to hit 100kg, felt solid, steady and pain-free, will probably work up to 110kg next week, 120 week after, etc. Do that until I hit 150kg and start throwing in some rep work. Onwards.

Got some upper back work lined up for tomorrow, in a BB fashion again. Will probably play it by ear but would like to get into some strength work in a month.
