Ok, comp report here we go.

Grand Prix de Paris/Ile de France, that's right you heard me!

I.e. 8 of us on the pétanque court in Faremoutiers, a village 1-hour east of Paris and home of the leading powerlifting club in the area apparently. Several entrants bowed out at the last minute, should have been a 15 man comp. Pussies!

Competitor weights ranged from 87kg to 140kg, with a couple of novices with serious equipped powerlifting credentials (Eric Athias 350kg squat@90kg or something like that, poor guy tore his biceps on the tire flip, puts his preps for Worlds in November in jeopardy) and several regulars of the French SM ciruit, such as it is. Dominique Didier (who competed alongside Joni in Burgdorf, CH a couple weeks back) was on hand. Great bunch of guys, some very strong, others with great technique, some with both strength and technique, the bas***ds. I was my usual weak, never-trains-implements self, but I had fun and didn't do too bad.

- Truck pull (harness) 20m

This was supposed to be arm over arm, but it wouldn't budge in testing so they switched to harness. Apparently I wasn't low enough, and I think I was using my arms too much. Meh.

Result: ~11m, 7th/8

(Eric the powerlifter was first out, did it in weightlifting shoes the poor sod, slipping all over the place and he even lost one shoe! Bad start to a worse afternoon for him) A few other guys didn't finish the course, there was a slight but nasty uphill near the very end.

- Log lift, max weight 3 attempts

I started out conservatively at 77kg, then 87kg, then took a gamble at 97kg ->F. I should have stuck to 92kg, because another heavier guy attempted 102 and failed and his 2nd attempt was 92kg, so I could have been second-last by bodyweight. Roll-Eyes

Result: 87kg (PB), 8th/8

- Carry and drag: 150kg duckwalk 15m, load on 50kg pallet, drag back.
This was head-to-head (FUN!) on gravel (f**k!) I had old worn out Adidas Sambas, no regular sneakers with decent tread, and this killed me on the drag. I rushed the duck-walk and dropped it twice but was still in the lead, then I couldn't get a rythm on the drag. All I could do was jerk the damn thing around, but if I tried to walk it back I almost fell on my ass. Also got distracted by the whistle signalling the other competitor had crossed the finish line, and time ran out. f**k me.

Result, 15m carry+13m? drag, 7th or 8th/8

- Tire flip, 5 flips, 440kg

I had just gotten my hands on a heavy-ish tire a few days before with limited success, so I figured I would get at least 1 flip. I was right. Once again the slick soles didn't help much, but even worse on my first lift I rested the tire low on my knees and it slid/peeled off my knee sleeves. f**king hell. Took down the sleeves, and finally got a flip done, but that's all I had in me. Heavy as fook, and s**te technique on my part as well. One guy was grabbing it by the underside to finish the flip, never seen it done like that before but very effective. It was his tire, too, so he nailed the bas***d of course. He has a video on his FB, but not on youtube. Eric the powerlifter blew his right biceps on this. Another guy no-repped. And still another got only 1 flip, IIRC.

Result: 1 flip, 6th/8

- Atlas stones, 130kg to 140cm for reps

Too high/heavy for me, although I feel my technique has improved a bit (this was only my third time evar with stones). Lapped and lifted the b**ch 3 times, but always a bit short of loading it. Not too disappointed, but a bit frustrated. One guy (a bit shorter and ligther than me) was ever so close to loading it. Injured guy didn't attempt it of course, and another bloke no-repped as well.

Result: 0 reps, 6th/8

Overall: 11 points (tied), 6th/8 by bodyweight.

I was a bit disappointed by the truck pull and carry+drag, and I could have been smarter on the log lift, but I still enjoyed myself. That's it for strongman this year for me, can't make the last two comps in September (one of which is simply out of my league, 400kg yoke and so on). I'm going to try and go to more comps next year, and maybe start buying some kit, because apart from loads of strength I really need to work on my skills.

Now it's back to regular lifting and transitioning into fitness and erging for the winter.

EDIT: the u90-ish guy who owns the tire finished 3rd overall, beating out one of the talled and larger entrants and all of the lightweights/105ers. Impressive performances from him.

I wish I had a choice! Grin Next year I'll try to sort my s**t out and do some easier comps as well, like the Swiss ones where they actually have weight classes. Or maybe the French fed will have the balls/money/participation levels to split their comps into u105 and open.

Are you doing 5/3/1?

Yeah, although it's been more like 10/10/10 for me. I'll phase it out over the next couple of months and do maintenance lifting this winter, and when I reload it in 2013 I might start with a higher 1RM and see how that goes.

Cycle 4 Week 1

Deads
126x5, 146x5, 166x10

In the spirit of fagging it up with some conditioning, I did the daily wad with everyone else. It involved moving your legs back and forth rather quickly to generate forward motion. It's called ramming, or bumming, or something like that. I was told it's quite popular and people even do it at the Olympics Eek , but as for me I can't recall having done anything similar in the past several months at least. In fact, some chubby chick was better at it than me . Anyway, there it was, here it is:

3 rounds
400m ram/bum/whatever
15 burpees

Rest 2'

3 rounds
15 deadlifts @60kg
8 front squats @40kg

Total time (including rest): 13:53

I went into BEASTMODE and totally CRUSHED the second half of the workout. Chubby chick et al. were NO MATCH for my ELITE lifting skillzs. I DESTROMINATED those 60kg DLs, yes I did!

f**k me I'm out of shape... Roll-Eyes

good stuff about the comp Happy looks like a fun one, too bad about the numbers, hope it will pick up in france!

At least we seem to get a few orders from france if that is anything to go by (or maybe they are all crossfitters...)

I pimped the strengthshop.de site on a French site (mostly CrossFitters) and there was a satisfied customer within the week. Wink Even CFers need racks, bars and hopefully stones/FW/logs.

Thanks. Reppage is the name of the game for another couple of weeks. Then hopefully I'll Hulksmash some 1RM PBs and call it a season.
