Has anyone got any insight/experience of training after a herniated disc?
I popped mine 2 weeks ago attempting a pb deadlift and am now wondering when to start back and how long it will take me to get back to full strength?
Im just about walking properly now but still got lots of pain in my lower back and still numb down my left leg but compared to the first few days after it happened its not too bad at all , ive got most of my ROM back only thing im really struggling with is tying my shoelaces but never been much good at that
Im back in the gym on monday which my my doctor thinks is too soon but not going to push it just some light chest and shoulder work mostly so that I can start feeling better about myself as ive been down as F$Łk since it happened and dont want to feel like a "normal" bloke lol
Would like to do some light leg extensions as well but bit concerned about my left leg being numb so prob gonna wait till I can feel at least my knee again
What I really want to know is how soon anyone who has done this has taken to get back to full event training as atm the thought of doing heavy yoke or stones seems a million miles away and if after its happened once how likely would it be that it goes again ? I know theres no exact times for these things but be nice to hear from someone whos been there and came back stronger?

What would a health professional who you've consulted know?
I'd advise that Monday is too late and that you should be in there now.

Earlier if possible!

Are you suggesting going back in time? If so, how? Sprinting backwards?

Im packing my gym bag now I think we all know that doctors err on the side of caution and in the current climate of "where theres blame theres a claim" have to cover their backs and tend to give blanket advice rather than tailor a rehab program for each individual case and I cant really blame him for that , as i say Im only looking to do some light upper body work monday and not gonna push things , thanks for the advice though

ok, so doc says its too soon AND you still have a numb leg..... clearly you know its too soon!
maybe abit of chest/shoulders/arms if your desperate, but every effort you waste lifting weights, is more time till the back heals up properly delaying you futhur from lifting. sometimes you gota do what you dont want to do and rest it up and except that its not like you pulled a muscle, you slipped a disc!!
however, that being said, my dad when he was my age (maybe alil bit older) fell off his lorry trailer whilst strapping the sides up and snapped a disc and displaced 2. docs told him he will be lucky to use his legs properly and will more than likely be in a wheel chair. he walked out of hospital on crutches 3 days later and still today is full time worker 23(ish) years later. he is however on medication for rest of his life to deal with the pain etc.
moral of the story; you do what you want, but you deal with the consequences of the actions. you may be itching to get in gym, but could you handle if you do more damage to it.....

Osteopath? Physio? Worth getting their advice before you do anything?

Yeah gonna see an osteopath next week but know that most osteos/physios take a fairly dim view of strongman in general so idealy would like to hear from someone whos been in the same situation and gotten back to full event training and competing.

I fear your concerns may be fruitless

speaking from my own experience and trial and errors with my own lower back issue.
if you have hernidated a disc and its causing a numbing feeling down your leg then i wouldn't rush back to squats or dead lift to soon but my problem is different from yours.
best thing i could say is that you should try and keep it simple working on your core strength and mobility plus plenty stretching.
a person you should contact on this sight ie mark Lawson (marklawson) as his injury sounds very similar to yours in terms of how your feeling.

What you're looking for is someone to say yes, it is ok. If that is the case then just crack on.
If you want genuine advice then go and see a specialist before you train. I was recommended an osteopath by stainless and the guy is great. He worked with the All Blacks for a number of years and understands their passion comes first and that he has to help fix them so that they can carry on.
Ask for recommendations of a good osteopath near where you live who deals with sports people.

true. doesnt affect me if people listen to my advice or not realy, just want people to do their best
i tore my shoulder out 2 years ago at work. all i wanted to do the moment i could move my arm was train, so being ignorant i started, it got worse. the docs told me if i carry on id never press/ have correct shoulder movement again. so i listened, did nothing for 4 weeks, then only rehab band work for the next 3 weeks every day, then light db work for 4 weeks after that.....
last week i strict pressed 100kg for 2 reps at a bodyweight of 95kg. had i have not listened to my doctor id probably be lucky to press 20kg x 2reps!
i also know plenty of people who have egnored docs advice and returned back stronger than ever. its a personal choice at end of the day
