I think we need guidelines for PB's: - only in main hardcore mofo movements - the only exeption to this rule is commonly accepted milestones, such as stacking a machine - the accepted PB reps should be as follows: single (the ultimate PB), double, triple and 5. - Another possible rep PB could be 5x5, 3x3 and 2x2 - but i suggest that these are treated with suspicion - if you did a double with something, are you sure you would not have been able to do another one? - bulls**t PB - currently held by Olly. | ||

Anything less than that is a slippery slope - 5s? Why not sixes? 5x5? What about 3x3? And then there's always the Jonny Mills option of choosing a weight that you happen not to have lifted before, doing as many reps and you feel like and calling it a PB. Or taking your belt off and calling it a beltless PB. Etc etc. | ||

According to him, hitting new pb's, even rather meaningless ones, is good for motivation, enthusiasm, and as he points out, they add up over time. I have a better proposition. What I classify as a PB for me, is a PB. What you classify as a PB for you, is a PB. You can cheat all you like, but you're only going to be cheating yourself. I dont see how nailing 5 reps with a weight you havent done 5 reps with before isnt a PB. If my best deadlift for 5 reps is 200, and I manage to do 205 for 5, that's a PB. The key word imo is 'personal'. They are personal bests, not anyone elses, theyre yours. So, seeing as theyre my bests, I think i'll decide what is and what isnt a PB. | ||

Sure, I'm not trying to be authoritarian about it! I don't think the Dubious PB Committee idea was supposed to be that serious. I just think it gets a bit daft and devalues the idea of a PB when every second set in your workout is a PB just because it's an exercise or a rep range or a weight that you haven't done before. | ||

Incidentally Ive only hit 1 pb since April 30th With regard to the dubious Pb committee, I think we should be authoritarian. There isnt enough of it about these days, and I think Sugden Barbell should show the world how its done. | ||

I use my PBs to track my progress, and it IS progress - at least I think so. Obviously a PB single in a powerlift is much more exciting, but the others are satisfying, motivational, and remind you that you're going in the right direction. Some of the volume PBs are EXTREMELY satisfying - the first and so far only time I got 100x10x2 on the bench I was about as happy as it's possible to be. | ||

Of course you always keep doing some extra bits because thats the whole point of training. PBs should stand out from normal training, so there has to be more of a criteria than just something which hasn't been done before. | ||
