YES.

Pete, I never had a foam roller until the wife decided to buy one for herself. I do a few minutes over my lower and upper back before and after most workouts now and i think it works well.

a bit of rest and a little warm weather will have you fresh and dead lifting better in no time

Nice idea but i don't do holidays. I shag women, lift weights and back horses, if you go to warm, sunnier climes, there are no weights, the women won't let me shag them and there are no bookies, ergo, I don't do holidays

I like the sound of this even more, you being a medical man it carries more clout, you are also, if I recall correctly, exceedingly handsome. That never does any harm

A foam roller, Pete, is an approximately 3ft long, 6 inch diameter cylindrical shaped piece of high density foam. Owing to it's form, it lends itself reasonably well to rolling. Thus, an appropriate name for the device was thought up.

In 1977....

etc etc.

Ok basically, you find the problem area, in your case your glute. What you do, is place the foam roller on the floor, and place your glute on top of the foam roller. You are allowed two contact points with the floor. One of them is through your glute on to the foam roller, pick your second point wisely. In this case, I would choose an arm. Leverage yourself in such a way, that as much of your weight as possible is going through your glute into the piece of foam. Proceed to 'roll' the foam back and forth over the troublesome area. That was misleading, don't think about rolling the piece of foam, this implies using dextrous appendages such as hands. Push your body (with your second contact point) forwards and backwards, so that the sore area of your glute does the rolling over the piece of foam!

I left out the most important detail. WHY you would do this. It serves the same purpose as deep tissue work you would have done by a sports masseur/physiotherapist. It WILL hurt while doing it, but then these things do. You'll eventually come to enjoy the feel of it. Other problem areas that benefit from foam rolling are the entire of the back, I like to do it straight down the middle, and also leaning over to each side. The hip flexors benefit massively from this, you have to figure out how to keep your dick out of the way though. The entire length of the quads is always a painful one. The fact that it's painful, by the way, implies that you have left it far too long before/inbetween doing this. The entire length of the IT band (down the outside of your leg between hips and knees) is almost certainly always going to be a painful/worthwhile option.

I've never actually seen one in a shop, but I did buy mine in person. I used to recieve physio treatment (at great expense) from http://www.harrisandross.co.uk/

They are based in Manchester, and sell them at their clinic. I doubt they would turn you away just because you're not a patient, but it's perhaps worth ringing up and enquiring.

No problem Pete, have a look on ebay, I'm sure they will be cheaper. If you can get one that's maybe 1 - 1 1/2 ft long, it will do the trick just as well, and be cheaper. If you get one that's 3ft long, consider cutting it in half and storing one half away. They don't last forever, and it would be a good idea to have a completely fresh spare waiting for you once you've crushed the first one beyond recognisable form.
