Hi fellas,

Just been browsing the forums for a while and noticed the box squat thing is really starting to take off. ie. at http://www.defrancostraining.com, they only seem to do box squats.

My questions are this;

1) Why do they seem to be becoming a replacement for the free squat in some circles? A box squat number means nothing to me, esp, as they are usually high.

2) Does anyone do them? If so, what benefits do you get?

I did do them at one point but didnt really get much out of them. I was veery new to the sport when i first tried them tho.. I will most likely try them again in the future but doing them as a replacement for full squats is a bit silly if you ask me.

I use box squats all the time. I used to hate squatting and my squat was stuck at 140-150kg for a loong time. Started box squatting last year and put 40kg on my PB in less than a year. I like them because it removes any doubts about how deep your squat is so I can just concentrate on lifting. I do squat off a low box (22cm) which I know alot dont. Vid of me box squatting:

If you do them I would recommend training with different box heights to stop a weakness developing.

Why don't you try them before condeming it....
I do them quite often, great PC developer especially glutes and hams. They also allow you to work very hard without having to use too much weight, therefore saving your cns from getting fried up.

Having said that,I now would drop them to free squats from 8 weeks out from competition.

I have tried them icepick, and i'm not condemning them, I see them as a useful assistance exercise.

My problem is, when prople replace free squat for box squat and/or totally neglect the free squat.

The main problem I have is when beginners or novices read about box squats and are brainwashed into thinking they are the only way to progress the squat.

Neglecting the free squat is a crime imo..

I accept that they are a good assistance exercise.. but at the sake of the free squat? Never.

People were squatting 360kg+ without equipment years before anyone ever dreamt of the box squat (in its modern form)

All I can say is they worked really well for me. If a beginner asked me about squatting id recommend them! Tongue

Good point FazGrin

Personally I like the box squat and can actually understand why it could replace the free squat for guys using heavy gear. After all, do they ever free squat?

Bah! I'm at a net cafe in brighton and time ran out!

I was in agreement with Badboy's point. But also wanted to say that there needs to be more talk about the 'appropriateness' of routines/exercises. Box squatting/WSB and all that has its place, its certainly not in a beginners routines.

So basically don't blame WSB when the f**kwit who's squatting 100kg or less is considering using their routines. But educate said f**kwit, on what he's doing wrong.

Very true. I think WSB gets a lot of stick that it doesnt deserve from said 'f**kwits'.
