Mikeneto said:Group 5 was a silly athlete selection.

They put in 3 finalists from last year and a guy who deadlifted 1000lbs and broke the American log record.

I keep seeing this being said but one of those finalists was Hicks who never competed.
You couldn't reasonably seed Thompson and despite being close Luke has never been a finalist so it wouldn't be reasonable to seed him ahead of the guys who made last years final.

How would you draw the groups to avoid such a line up? With the calibre of athletes it's unavoidable that one or 2 strong guys will miss out.

Jerry almost podiumed last year and won't be in the final. Sometimes thing's just don't go your way in sport.

Wide grip frame carries just aren't kind on the guys without a 6ft wingspan.

Awww.was the frame too wide for his short little arms? Bless him...

Transparency in the group and event selection process is one of those on-the-wishlist-but-will-never-happen with WSM. If you had seeds then a random draw it would sort out some of the controversy.

He looks to me to have a 6’3ish wingspan anyway.

Watched the Facebook Backstage Live coverage this morning. Pretty good interviews with the log and stone winners of each group.

Colum Brice explained the rules well. For stones 2nd place didn't have to lift the stone if 3rd failed first. They only returned the stone. 20secs to lift stone.

Last year was side by side, so no advantage for 2nd.

Shiv tripped in train push. Cost him a spot on stones IMHO.

Max Log record hopefuls would be Luke, who mentioned doing 240kg, Thompson and Eythor. Maybe Brian up there.

Caron, Thompson and Brian will be fun on deadlift.

I'm still guessing Tom or Shaw for No1. Luke for 3. I think Thompson could cost Caron points on deadlift and overhead. Good to see Caron has improved the press so much.

Apparently the heat yesterday was in 40s and fried the wifi and boiled the train brakes. They had to get a meat truck for the film crew gear and a cold tent for the crew and athletes. That caused delays but was medical advice. Glad they looked after competitors.

Would love to see Shaw win and then instantly retire at winner. However, he really hasn't performed when needed in the big comps for the last few years.

However, I would be equally as happy to see Tom. Luke or Bish take the crown. Also a big shout to JF who really has been close so many times.

Haha I was coming here to say I have 5 horses in the final that I would like to win and you names them

Obviously be great to have one of the local lads win, but as an individual sport, I confess to being a bigger shaw fan than anyone and would love him to win title number 5

Caron has consistently got better and better each year, so would be cool to see him win

I feel like JF has paid his dues so to speak, and just seems like a great guy.

Shaw obviously has been such a top figure in the sport for so long, and I certainty think he deserves one more win... Of course, deserving and earning it are two different things.

In a fairy tale world though, would love to see Luke win, then Tom win the next year.

Brian seems to be on a different level than last year.
Tom was flying but had a couple of weaker events. Or he backed off a bit.
Luke was consistent and solid.
Bish looks to be on form but had a shaky start.
Shame Felix had to miss out.
Looking forward to watching this at Chrimbo.

I’ll have to figure out my predictions for the Finals but for the sake of accountability, comparison to what I thought would be the case and what is the case with the qualifying heats.

My Predictions
Group 1 – Boudreault/Shaw
Group 2 – Mitchell/Stoltman
Group 3 – Richardson/Caron
Group 4 – Pritchett/Bishop
Group 5 – Novikov/Stoltman

Actual
Group 1 – Shaw/Boudreault
Group 2 – Mitchell/Stoltman
Group 3 – Caron/Melsted
Group 4 – Janashia/Bishop
Group 5 – Thompson/Stoltman

The one thing that really skewed by results was the loading medley having that heavy frame at the end. I had been treating it as a speed event and that frame really changed things up and it was too late to redo predictions after that detail was released (and drop outs for injury). I had no one having an easy time qualifying based off of point breakdown, ties and countbacks with only group 3 having someone with a decent lead. Can’t control things like injuries and such (Hollands, Hicks, Pritchett, Singleton, Van Der Linde).

Things I got wrong besides the obvious was underestimating the improvement in JF’s overhead, both Stotlman’s grip, Melsted’s ability on the train push/pull (he had also compete the week before this) as well as Hansson’s on same event. Pritchett coming in banged up is the norm and I assumed he would be on point like last year due to no comps. Singleton allegedly had a stomach bug that kept him from keeping food down for 72hrs so that could explain the first two days being off.

The oddly specific things I factored in and got right was that Shivlaykov would screw up on the train event (slipped). The man has a problem with his feet on these events. Also had that both Stoltman’s would go to the stone off and win (though I had their opponents wrong). I had Oberst making it to the stone off and losing again. I had with Group 2 that despite having the higher max deadlift, Singleton would get 4th behind Stoltman, Mitchell and Felix.

I tend to think this is due to the events. I had him pegged to win the group on that basis.

we will see where his form really is when he is amongst the top ten I reckon.

awesome to see the bishman back in the final.
