Imagine you have £5000. to spend on a classic car. Lets say pre 1980 and its for fun in addition to an everyday car so you don't need to get a morris traveller just so you can get a pushchair in it.
What would you buy and why?

no idea how much they cost.
But a jag e type coupe.
0-60 in a shade under 7 and 150 top speed. not bad for such an old car.
They just look so sleek and beautiful

I think you're going to struggle to find a running E-Type for £5k I like your style though.
A MK1 Escort RS2000 might fit the bill

a mk1 escort would be nice, or a 205 t16 or 45 mi16, or a quattro sport
pretty much any of the road versiosn of the old rally cars would be sweet

Not sure what it is, but I'd like one of these.

£5,000 isn't quite enough for a good example of most classics.
I've had 3 old Rolls Royces and loved them to bits.
One was a 1974 Corniche which originally belonged to Cliff Richard and the other two were 1975 Silver Shadows.
You can get a decent Shadow for around £7,000 and really good one for about £10k.
When I was 17 I had a Rover 3500S, this was the four door P6 Rover that preceeded the SD1, in fact I had two of those in a row and did a load of work on one of them just before some stupid woman pulled out on me at a junction and wrote it off.
These don't fetch silly money and you could get a good one of those for £5k.
I also love old Jags and you can get a nice old XJ6 or XJ12 for £5k, or even an XJ-S but you need 3 times that amount for an E-Type that is worth buying, anything less is a basket case.
If I had a ceiling of £5k I would chose an old V12 Jag, but I would prefer to spend more and find a nice Roller. I'm always looking for mint old Shadows and could buy one at any moment.

I also loved the 3.0litre Capris, and later the 2.8 Injection and spent much of my early 20's going sideways in those, before I saved up enough to buy a Cossie which I couldn't get insured for love nor money so just had to chance my arm !
