New to the forum, thought it'd be a good idea to start my lifting log here too, because most of you guys are British too.

Not going to give you my life story (unless you want it) but basically I am tall (6'3) and naturally very skinny. I've been lifting on and off for a wee while now. It's been on and off because I have managed to get ill a few times for a few months, which pretty much put my lifts back to zero. But I've been lifting very consistently since January now and I'm stronger than ever.

I train in Aberdeen and my gym is pretty good: it's got Eleiko bars and bumpers, four power racks and platforms, I'm allowed to use chalk and the girls are quite nice too if you know what I mean.

I've trained in a few different ways over the years, so I have built up a little idea of what does and doesn't work for me. Some of the routines I've used over the years have been Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength; Iron Addict's Simple Power Based Routine; Vikingman's Westside for Skinny bas***ds modification; Exmgq's basic routine; Madcow's 5x5; and I've also just dicked about on my own using an upper/lower split too.

What always worked best for me was full body, frequent squatting, although now I can squat more than three plates for reps I often feel that I've outgrown that approach. What doesn't work for me is when I combine low volume and low frequency together to train like a proper pussy. High reps don't work for upper body either.

Current PBs:

Squat: 155 x 5
Bench: 85 x 3 x 3
Deadlift: 170 x 5
Overhead press: 62.5 x 5

Upper body has always lagged behind lower body, but in the last two months my bench has went up 10kg and I'm fixing my squat form so probably won't be hitting any squat PBs for a while.

Oh, and I'm now 95kg.

Cheers!

Also, tonight's session.

Terrible session tonight:

Squats:

80 x 5
100 x 5
120 x 3

These felt absolutely terrible, no hip drive or anything, absolutely terrible, so stopped there.

Leg press:

170 x 10
170 x 10

Meh. Haven't leg pressed in over a year... felt awkward, though.

RDLs:

90 x 6
120 x 5
130 x 5
130 x 5

These weren't that hard, but my grip was really struggling.

Thanks! I'd do anything for a 117.5 bench, though. Been failing at the bench for years. Unhappy

One of the reasons for that is probably because I've never done much upper body volume. I was actually quite scared of volume at one time, and would make sure that my workouts consisted of no more than 8 sets. During that time, the most I ever benched was 70 for 3-6.

Since upping my volume, either via increased frequency or increased number of sets, I've done three not too hard triples with 85.

I train at RGU Sport. I'm a student and it offers excellent prices (eleven quid a month) and has an excellent weights room to boot - even if it's often full of douches.

I've been to Results a few times. It's a good gym, but it was out of my price range and the RGU gym has more squat racks (which is what I needed when I signed up again). My membership runs out at Christmas, and by then I'll possibly be looking to find a closer gym since it takes me just under an hour to get to the RGU one (and an hour back home). The Sports Village is much closer but also much more expensive if I want peak membership, which I'll need cos I've got lectures during the day.

I've also heard about the new gym opening, yeah. I don't have any info on it, though, although I've heard it's the new Results or something. You got any more info on it? Cheers

Looks like your journal has started on a bum note with that workout so things can only improve. Best of luck with it pal ( esp the bench Happy )

Yeah the RGU gym has pretty much everything you need to get bigger and stronger, compete in powerlifting or olympic lifting. Can't really complain at all about the quality of the gym, especially for the price. The Sports Village is pretty much exactly the same, been there a few times as well.

I've heard about the Mastrick gym before but it'd still take me ages to get there, unfortunately.

Thanks for the info Happy

Knew this evening wasn't going to be great, just wasn't feeling it. Plan was to do some deficit deadlifts but thought naaa, I'll just do some like technique work on the squats since I've recently changed my technique, but 120 felt like what 220 probably feels like and I just couldn't be arsed. I don't think I've ever had a good Saturday workout before.

Bench press:

87.5 x 3
87.5 x 3
87.5 x 3

Happy with this. 90 next time!

Close grip bench press:

60 x 8
70 x 5
70 x 5
70 x 5

Some sets were harder than others. The sets in which I tried to be as quick as possible were the easiest. I notice the same thing with the press too - speed = better.

Incline dumbbell bench press:

25s x 6
25s x 4
25s x 4

Bah, not enough rest, hence the poor performance.

Laterals:

7.5s x 10
7.5s x 10
7.5s x 10

I have no medial delts.

Face pulls:

red band x 10
red band x 10

Not sure what the resistance on the red band is but it felt about right.

Dumbbell curls:

12.5s x 10
12.5s x 10

Feeling absolutely knackered this evening. So did some 'speed' work instead.

Speed squats:

90 x 3
90 x 3
90 x 3
90 x 3
90 x 3

These were slow as f**k. Really poor form too.

Speed deadlifts:

80 x 3
90 x 3
100 x 3
110 x 3

Better.

Pull throughs:

100lbs x 10
100lbs x 10
100lbs x 10
100lbs x 10

Easy.

Lower body recently has been f**king s**te! Must fix that soon. Going onto a pre-made routine soon, definitely.

Trained in my garage tonight, and the weights I use there are always lower than in the gym, so instead of going for some heavy weight I usually just try some new stuff and get in some volume.

Floor press:

60 x 6
60 x 6
70 x 5
70 x 5
70 x 5
60 x 6
60 x 6
60 x 6

First time ever doing these. Really feel them on the triceps. Not too hard, weights went up fast enough; only time they were difficult was at the bottom.

Barbell rows:

70 x 6
70 x 6
70 x 6
70 x 6
70 x 6
70 x 6

Easy enough. Short rest periods too.

Flyes:

3 x 10

Meh, it's a flye.

Did some barbell curls too but got bored and my own bar seems to hurt my wrists when curling.

Took less than an hour.
