Sometime next year I plan to be the force that moves one of those immovable objects. Tongue

Thursday 18th October

Push Presses(1 clean per set)

10 X 20kg
10 X 20kg
3 X 60kg
2 X 80kg
2 X 80kg
2 X 80kg
2 X 80kg
2 X 80kg
2 X 80kg
2 X 80kg
2 X 80kg - missed the 2nd press at the first attempt but didn't miss the second time.

Clearly, I've decided that(for the moment) I need volume at sub-maximal weights.

Then LOOOTTTTTTTTTTS of sandbag work to finish.

I'm going to employ a similar, high set, strategy with deadlifts and to a lesser extent front squats and old school hacks.

I'll throw in more sandbag work, go to the dungeon when I can and fit in rows and other bits when I can.

Good to see you start a journal Pete. Stick with it and you'll reap the benefits when you come to mine.

Continuing along the lines of the high volume:

22nd Oct

Deadlifts - regular

10 X 60kg
5 X 100kg
3 X 140kg
1 X 170kg
2 X 190kg
2 X 190kg
2 X 190kg
2 X 190kg
2 X 190kg
2 X 190kg
2 X 190kg
2 X 190kg

Probably a bit unconventional but at least I'm training now. Too wasted to do any more exercises tonight.

Fri 26th October

Push Presses(1 clean per set)

10 X 20kg
10 X 20kg
10 X 20kg
3 X 60kg
2 X 82.5kg way too easy
2 X 85kg
2 X 85kg
2 X 85kg
2 X 85kg
2 X 85kg
2 X 85kg
4 X 85kg (threw in a couple of extra reps as it was still feeling so easy even after 7 other work sets)

Plenty of sets again!! Even in the VERY limited time that I've done this program, I'm seeing major benefits already. Although it was light, every single clean hit my upper chest exactly where I was hoping - effortlessly. Then every push press felt scarily easy. I felt a real explosion/snap off my chest that I don't think I've ever felt before. Maybe I should have increased the weight but I wanted to guarantee getting my 8 work sets in.

I suppose my muscles are already developing great "muscle memory" because of the amount of sets that I'm doing. I think that not going to failure might be helping too. I'm not getting mentally or physically wiped out from the sessions - just feeling ecstatic at how well it's going so far.Grin Grin Grin

Hi Pete!

Why so many sets of doubles, mate? That's a genuine question by the way, not a criticism.Wink

Hi Titch,

There isn't a science behind it!I'm just trying to get a bit of volume in as I'm very inconsistent with my training (and that's putting it very, very mildly). I got in a bit of consistent training about 4 months ago but apart from the odd session, I've not trained for about 2 and a half years.

I'm going to reduce the volume when the numbers get somewhere near what I think I'm capable of.

30th October

Trained at Mr Mills' place tonight. I was feeling pretty worried about at least three of Saturday's events(make that worried about 6 of Saturday's eventsUnhappy )

In all seriousness, I now realise that I should have done one of two things:

1. Trained for more than a handful of sessions since about June/July
2. Not entered the comp

Anyway, I'm not going to pull out now Happy

YOKE

Went OK with my warm up weights including the 280kg

320kg, "easy pickup" then went a 3 metres or so
320kg, another quite easy pickup then walked a massive ONE step
320kg, pickup still felt fine but couldn't pick up my leg without dropping the yoke

AXLE

Tried many weird and wonderful ways to clean the axle without too much success.

75kg Mixed grip clean to stomach, kept the mixed grip edged it another 6 inches, then still with the mixed grip got it too my shoulders, balanced it with one hand on my shoulders whilst I swapped my hand around then got the press.

Needless to say, Jonny said he'd never come across someone with that exact technique. It was very awkward but I couldn't think of another way.

I then used the same technique for a rep with 85kg.

Same technique again with 95kg. This time I failed the press.

DUMBBELL one handed

Some easy warmups with 20kg and 30kg

Still quite comfortable at 40kg with both left and right hand

Bombed out at 50kg. Nearly locked out on first attempt with the right but didn't have the core and/or tricep strength. The bad starting position didn't help either.

So, there you go, I'm sure all the other lads are now quaking in their boots. Wink

The worry that I had has now become much more severeEmbarassed

add a wee bit of the comp rush and who knows what will happen.

And there will be other guys as well who will bag a 0 from some of the events like the axle. And 50% chance of me on the dumbell Grin

But the deadlift battle is something to look forward to!

How are you getting up to Ed?

Yeah, I suppose there might be one or two guys who no rep an event. We'll see.

On getting there, my Dad lives just over the border so I'm staying at his on Fri night and we're travelling the rest of the way on Sat morn.

Just gonna rest before the comp now.
