12h night ski went pretty well. Definitely a different beast from ultra rowing (outdoors, weight bearing exercise, but no butt pain!). It wasn't too cold, I didn't bonk, just some general soreness and fatigue. The snow was nice and fast at first, before inevitably turning to slush by the end of the morning. It was a longish loop (8km) and there weren't that many participants, so I mostly skied by myself, but that didn't bother me. I managed 22 laps, 176km in total, just under my target of 15km/h average (including breaks). The winner did 26 laps/208km. Overall the event was well organized and everything went smoothly, especially considering it was the inaugural edition.

I was musing about strongman in my previous post but actually next up is a 24h "max elevation gain" race, going up and down a hill. This is something I signed up for two years ago and it got postponed repeatedly, so you'd think I've had plenty of time to think it through, but here we are. Skiing is easy on the body, downhills are a bonus (especially if you're on the heavier side), and I could rely on technique and experience. Basically the opposite will be true for running/hiking. So, 10-week prep starts now, I guess.

A bunch of running/walking this week. Legs definitely aren't ready for the mountains yet.

Light DB/BB work today (flies, curls, rev flies, Jefferson curl, GM). Trying to be more serious/consistent with mobility work as well.

Went for one last ski on Sunday. Conditions have really deteriorated and the resorts are closing, then again it's supposed to snow this weekend. Roll-Eyes

This morning:
10k row easy
Ankle mobility
Tibialis raises Grin 3x20/leg, 6kg KB
Pistol squat practice
Weighted narrow grip chinups 4x4x9kg

Went up and down the mountain in a bit of a snow storm, this morning. It's snowing right now outside my window, and temperatures will probably drop below 0°C overnight. Fruit crops are going to take a beating. Unhappy

According to FB, on this day 4 years ago I was skiing in fresh powder, so this isn't exactly unusual.

Same this morning, minus the row and plus db lunges 3x20/leg.

Wow, 4 months since my last post Eek

Quick summary:

* Early May, shot put and 3000m for an interclub competition. Happy with my 3000m (sub-12) although it got us fewer points than my s**tty shot put Tongue

* End of May: 24h vertical challenge, DNF after 20h. Left ITB went south around hour 14 and I could no longer walk downhill. Still added two loops, managing the pain on the way up and walking backwards on the way down, which was ridiculously slow (and just plain ridiculous to watch), then called it quits. 11 laps, 6800m D+.

I haven't been able to run much since then, the ITB acts up after a few km. Managed to train a bit in June, but in July I was drowning in work, and this week I was fighting back manflu, so not a very productive summer so far.

Holiday plans include somehow preparing for Hyrox in Basel mid-September, and lifting a few stones in Scotland in a couple weeks.

Running is getting better, but long distances are still out.

Scotland was wonderful, but I couldn't shoulder the Dalwhinnie stone nor the Barevan stone. Probably lacking a bit of technique , but mostly raw strength.

On the other hand my upcoming SM competitions are light enough that I don't need to worry (or train properly Roll-Eyes ).

Onwards, I guess.

Hyrox Basel, "pro" division: very much an amateur performance. I was fine for about 15 minutes (run 1k, skierg 1k, run 1k), but from the sled push onwards it was brutal. 1h25 total time, at the back of the pack.

I think it's one of those "it never gets easier, you just go faster" type of events, but if I ever sign up for one of these again I hope I have the time and willpower to train properly beforehand. Lesson learned? I wouldn't count on it. Tongue

I did my first strongman competition of the year (my second and last will be in two weeks). Not too far from home (1.5 hour drive, near Lyon), manageable weights, just like I like them these days. Happy

I needed a small calorie/water cut to make it under 90kg in the morning, nothing drastic but I may not have refuelled enough after weigh-in. That's the only real mistake I made on the day so overall it was a solid performance, 4th/6 in the u90's, in line with my current level (ie overaged and undertrained Tongue) It was a beautiful day, good atmosphere, some sloppy judging at times but no big deal. They had invited a couple of foreign athletes in the Open category, including Shane Sutton from Goliath Strongman gym in Wigan, if that rings a bell for anyone.

- Carry medley: 95(?)kg stone (no tacky), 100kg metal cross, 90(?)kg metal Husafell. The stone went fine, then I felt light-headed on the cross carry and had to slow down and regroup before the Husafell, which again felt fine. 4th?

- Farmers 110kg + Zercher yoke 190kg. Farmers felt heavy but I was still moving quickly, then I felt dizzy again on the Zercher carry and had to drop it a couple times. 5th?

It's a pity because I could/should have finished top 3 in both carry medleys, it's not the weights as such that slowed me down. Don't know if lack of practice played a part but I suspect not having enough calories in the morning was the major factor.

- Atlas stones 100-120-140kg. This was on a "stone circle" with those little baskets, first time ever dealing with one of these and it sure isn't as easy as jamming the stones up on a platform. First two stones went fine, 140 never left the floor. Tongue Nobody got the 140 (gives you an idea of the level of competition) but I don't know how I placed timewise. 2nd or 3rd, if I had to guess.

- 90kg axle overhead (from the floor) for reps in 90s. 5 reps, 4th place. No complaints here, this was never going to be a strong event for me but the jerks felt pretty good.

Van arm-over-arm pull. We were supposed to have a 12 ton truck, but the driver bailed on the organizers at the last minute Unhappy So it was a slightly downhill seated pull, in other words a hand over hand sprint. I think the 6 times were within 2 seconds of each other, and I believe I won by a few tenths. The u105s and Opens had to drag the van back up after the arm-over-arm, and they all hated it. Grin

Main goal for Basel in two weeks is to stay at 89.9 so I don't need to f**k around with making weight. Other than that I'm still having fun and I didn't get injured: success!

Good stuff Happy

I really missed strongman for a while, but those days are slipping further and further into the past now. I'm enjoying being more health focused.

Rightly so! Strongman is definitely becoming more of a "Facebook memory" for me as well. I'll stop when I no longer enjoy faking my way through a local comp. Happy
