Maybe not a case of a completely new weight cat just a shake-up of what events go into an open comp so that might benefit a lighter open competitor and are more varied and less based on max poundage for each event. I.E more endurance events, which are still heavy, power stairs / Deadlift & overhead medleys / throwing events. All of which look cool for the spectators and keep the Athletes interest also.

In theory both powerstair and throwing events would favour taller guys, but I take your general point.

There is nothing stopping any promoter putting on an open comp that is more based on moving events and less about static maxes.

It this point I agree with Andy (Robocop) that the Arnolds has possibly not been that good for strongman, as it has added to the statically heavier is always better idea.

And what if there is lots of demand for it once those individual comps are run?
Would you then still be against setting up qualifiers and a final for a class there was a demand for in order to protect another class?

Davy, if a 120kg class was set up with national qualifers do you think you would be competitve in it? Assuming that the weights will have to be heavier than the 105s class.

I'd say it would be a good idea as would give a stepping stone from 105 to opens.
On the other hand though I don't think that there should be regional qualifiers and a national final at 120.

Although in essence it would be more like a novice/ intermediate open comp

So far I'm thinking a one-off u120kg England vs Scotland match would be popular! lol

On a uk level, probably not, but i would be more competetive at that than at open currently. In Scotland, probably yes, as aside from Ken and Cherrie I am capable of competing with everyone else.

Its fine for it to be heavier than 105, it should be. Its not purely about the actual weights used on open, as has been said, a good 120 should be able to do them, they just wont do them as well as a good 150-160

The reason i think there should be one is nothing to do with the 105kg guys ... cutting and making weight is what it is all bout with weight classes unfortinatly so the 105 guys would still do 105 ... but with a 120 class there would be more comps for the 105 guys to do yearly and also the open weight guys which IMO i see ALOT OF

that sit around 120-140 and a pretty darn fat. .... can't diet to make 105 as it's to far but are never going to be competive in the opens (maybe down to personal choice aswell / supplements etc) they can diet to 120 get in some good nic be healther and compete competitivly in a sport making it more enjoyable instead of making up numbers and the like .... i don't think 105s should even let a 120 class bother them and just see it as the sport growing

robocop said:Coming into this late did not read all of the 7 pages so sorry if this has been said before but I want to address more on martins point about events and not weight class,
Tbh I my opinion the worst thing that ever happened to strongman was the Arnolds.
Now I never thought in a million years I would say that but it started the trend for this whole "let's make it hevier" attitude that has become a problem in the last couple of years.
Max deadlift is great, but not every f**king comp, and this whole thing where your now getting more than one pressing event in comps is wrong too, since when has shoulder strength been twice the importance of other disciplines
Sport has lost touch with it's history and events that can't be "maxed" out have been dropped.
Injuries have increased and the crowd I don't think enjoy watching it as much, who wants to see 8 guys fail a log and 1 guy get a rep and one guy win with 2
I am all for testing athletes to the limit but too much emphasis on "max static strength" at the moment and a slight shift in event choices would make the sport a little less boring to watch and safer for athletes

For some reason Andy I'm surprised by this answer and I appologise for having the wrong assumption. I don't know why I would think otherwise seen as you always put on such great fun events to watch and I'm sure its down to the above and I agree with very thing you said

Eng vs scot would be cool, why not extend it to eng vs scot/wal/ire to even out the odds

(england would still win)

To a certain extent I do wonder why introduce it when hixxy will just win it anyway Wink

we are either 140 or 90 in the North

if you want to include James Fennelly and Jonathan Kelly then we might have a fighting chance..

Some think its a good idea, some dont.

JC is the biggest critic as usual, but despite his militant opposition, wants to do it anyway.

A lot of guys safe in their weight class are less keen, most people who are around 120 but not good enough to challenge the really big guys are more keen.

Bish will be a big guy eventually so is not keen, Hixxy would OWN the catagory, so he is keen.

EDIT: And Martin wants a whole catagory dedicated to 90s WSM events for guys under 120kg

Thats kinda where we are i think Grin
