Tonight, with the comp looming, I break out the new (competition) suit and a fresh pair of knee wraps. It is always wise to do this some time before than you can get used to new stuff.

Squat, new suit, no belt, no wraps, straps up from the start. Alan, recognizing the new suit, says to take it easy, 270 will do

All weights in kilos

20 x 10
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
100 x 5
100 x 5
140 x 5
wraps on
180 x 3
220 x 1
240 x 1
260 x 1
270 x 1

The suit took some time to bed in evenly, sometimes it pulled on the right leg, and other times on the left, but all was well for the last three singles, in fact the last one was a peach. I do like news wrap as well. Kept getting a sharp pain in the right knee, just under the knee cap, when stepping under the bar to pick it up or to replace it. No problems with walkout or the squat, so I shall dismiss it as something and nothing. I could have lived without it though. Overall, happy with this tonight

Very thin on the ground today, not sure why. Bench, all kilos, raw to start with

20 x 20
20 x20
20 x 20
70 x 5
70 x 5
70 x 5
100 x 5
110 x 3
120 x 2
130 x 1
Derek puts the shirt on for me, considering it's his first time he does a good job
180 x 1 to three boards
190 x 1 to two boards
195 x 1 to one board
200 x 1 to half a board, this would have hit the chest had the board been absent
205 x 1 to chest, but it missed, quite a way off
The only difference with the 205 was we pulled the shirt down between lifts, maybe we shouldn't have. We leave it this time
200 x 1 touch but rolled forward out of my left hand, mainly because of the position my hand had to be in to get it to touch
200 x 1 touched but pressed like a schoolgirl
195 x 1 touched just, pressed again like a schoolgirl

Not the best of nights but far from the worst either, we touched with 200 and a bit less and we discovered that this is not a shirt that requires being pulled down. Leave it where it is (which is a bit close to the throat for comfort) and it will reward you.

Off to the home of the tubular bandage for girl number four. Happy days and a very reasonable end to a very reasonable evening

Deadlift, raw, all kilos

60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
100 x 5
me on 2" board, bar still on floor
140 x 5
180 x 3
200 x 3
210 x 3
180 x 3
180 x 3
me on floor again
180 x 3
180 x 3

All as smooth as a cashmere codpiece. Not heavy tonight as there is no need and we have been caning it lately, so a lighter one with the emphasis on smooth and fluent will do nicely. Passed the time with DrRick telling really bad and very old jokes, and then off, it was the last day of Cheltenham tonight, I have had five bets and the races are on HDD awaiting my pleasure

Sunday, 20th March, start 13:00

Back on track with the Sunday training.

Standing military press, all weight in kilos

20 x 10
20 x 10
20 x 10
20 x 10
30 x 10
40 x 5
45 x 5
50 x 5
55 x 5
60 x 5
65 x 5
50 x 5

A lot of warmups as I had a bit of a twinge in the left delt, but by the fourth set it had gone, all went well up to and including 60 kilos but the 65 felt a lot heavier and was a struggle so I dropped it to 50 and then stopped. Too close to the comp for heroics. Off the the White Bear for nosebag and a chat with Joe the Terrible. Joe will be my bagman at the comp, he is going early to assist Andy Kominsky early Saturday and staying over for the Sunday when I lift. I will travel down later on Saturday and stay over also so I don't have to get up at silly o'clock on Sunday and drive 100 miles before 9 o'clock. I will stay over, rise at seven, eat a breakfast big enough for three, arrive at the comp for 9, weigh in and acclimatize and be on the platform when called. All subject to change of course but according to our latest info, that's the plan

Not sure, Joe's in charge of that as he works for premier inns. probably the nearest one of those to the venue, I will ask him tomorrow and get in touch. We can definitely meet up for the Saturday night for a drink and a chat and some nosebag. I would enjoy that

Again a bit thin on the ground tonight, Handsome Jeff won a British title yesterday as so is resting, Taxi Mark leaves as I enter, and Joe the terrible has been and gone already. Little does he know but he will regret that

Squat, new suit, straps up, no belt, no wraps, all kilos

20 x 10
20 x 10
20 x 10
60 x 5
60 x 5
60 x 5
100 x 5
140 x 5
wraps on
180 x 3
I ask Alan what I am doing tonight, he asks what I did last week.
"270 single" I reply
"about the same then, but make it really good, we'll go up next week"
220 x 1
240 x 1
This was good and drew appreciative comments from the boss and DrRick
260 x 1
"Absolutely, absolutely, abso-phucking-lutely" says the boss, who does not use tmesis often "that was as good a squat as I have ever seen done" That dear reader is praise of the highest order
"another ?" I ask
"No, leave it at that, you aren't going to improve on that last squat, we'll call it a day there"

And that gentle reader is that. I am needless to say over the moon, DrRick concurred with Alan's comments and threw in a few of his own. It was good, it was deep. it was fluent and it was snappy. It would have given Joe an erection. Not an ache or a twinge to be seen. I have finished workouts on a highnote before, but this is the highest.

I have no comment on the squats Pete, as they are so far above me, that I cannot comprehend them. However, thank you for the use of the word tmesis. It is a word that isn't used e-bloody-nough

Wednesday, 23rd March, start 17:00

Walked round the gym tonight rather than hobbled, walked like a man with a corn on his toe no longer, good move that.
The new shirt demands heavy weights which, week after week tire me. And raw would be too light this close to the comp, so we have the old shirt tonight which lies somewhere between the two

Bench raw, all kilos
20 x 20
20 x 20
20 x 20
70 x 5
70 x 5
70 x 5
110 x 3
120 x 2
130 x 1
DrRick has murderer's gloves and has me in the older, slacker shirt jack quick
150 x 2 to three blocks
160 x 1 to two blocks
170 x 1 to one block
175 x 1 to chest but didn't quite reach, pressed nicely though and only "that" far off
180 x 1 to chest, touched
185 x 1 to chest, touched
190 x 1 to chest, touched

The seams lie a little differently with this shirt and with the bar on the chest it was like having your triceps stroked with a hacksaw blade. The presses were all good though, especially the 190 which was really rather nice. All in all a very successful workout, heavy but not too heavy, entertaining and rather pleasant. I enjoyed this
Off to the home of the tubular bandage where girl number one is back, she was hurled against all walls with a ferocity that amazed her.
