Just watched my recent squats back and some concerns with depth.

Need to do some stretching I think.

Are these to depth do you reckon?

Tbh I am pretty annoyed at how high they looked. I usually sink them pretty deep in comparison.

I think they look well in. Not always easy to tell when wearing baggy trackies but I’d never say they look high.

Difficult angle. Your knee is lower than the catchers and higher than the floor, so your angle needs to be in between the angles of the bars at those heights from our perspective. On that basis, I would say 4 is out and 5 is in; the others are close.

Some people preach "just in, more is a waste". I disagree. Even if the extra depth costs you a little (which I dispute, with appropriate technique), the mental boost from knowing you will never be failed on depth is worth it. Confidence is most of this game.

These are wise words indeed. From time to time I officiate at non sanctioned comps where novices can dip their toe in the water without shelling out on memberships and official equipment first. I generally talk them through each lift, commands, what refs look for, what causes a fail etc.

If you perform an heroic deep squat then any referee will pass that (assuming of course that everything else is in order), if you f**k it up heroically, it will be failed with alacrity. But if you squat borderline, then you will make us think and when we think we may not always come to the conclusion that you would like us to. My advice to any lifter is - don't make me think.

Heroic passes or heroic fails - either is easy because you will get the decision that everyone (including yourself) knows you deserved. Borderline and there can be considerable disagreement between yourself, your coach, your mates and the refs and only what the refs think matters, so it can all get a bit like Brexit. And we all know that would be best avoided.

My old coach always said that a borderline squat that gets failed is a huge amount of effort and brings zero reward. Go deep, be confident and have the peace of mind Rick refers to, and best of all, don't make me think. As Henry Ford once said "Thinking is the hardest work there is"

For the record I watched that video once and would have failed 1 and 4 and passed 2, 3 and 5 but I would have thought about them all.

Yeah I agree about the been just in bit and that you should leave no doubt.

I have never trained consistently but what I have noticed is my depth as dropped out as the years have gone on, flexibility maybe. Going from this

Good man. Use the recoil out of the bottom and you'll lose little or nothing from the extra depth. As a referee, I love people who squat like you in video 1, because I know I'll never have to break your heart.

I have a question.

Why did you go from wearing lifting shoes, to not?
I ask because I went from bare feet, to shoes, but that was the result of some injury and loss of movement.

You (seem to) have done the opposite?

I tend to go bare foot now. Used to wear weightlifting shoes for years.

I found that my tendinitis/quad tendinopothy is worse when use weightlifting shoes: but flats/bare foot doesn't seem to be so bad.

I also mitigate it further by doing DE work more than repetition work on squats.

I also did the same, having done weightlifting for many years, I'd not squatted in anything other than weightlifting shoes for about 12-years.

I switched to barefoot as I was told it would enable me to use more hips /posterior chain involvement and I believe it has and I'm now stronger on squat than I've been in the last 6-years within 12-months of switching to barefoot and am confident of a lifetime PB within the next 6-months.

This thread has me encouraged for my squats coming on Wednesday.
I'll try and do a switch to barefeet again after my warm up.
Will be interesting.
