Good session with James yesterday, things are coming along quite nicely again.

1) NGP - 25 reps

2) Bench
W/U to 70x5
Paused - 85, 100, 115 x 2, 5x2 @ 130 (all called by James)
Then to finish off, chucked the slingshot on, leaving a rep or so in hand on each set, 140x6, 150x4, 160x2.

Only a few more bench session, a couple more dead and squat sessions and its the All England, very exciting!

Some serious deadlifting this evening was due a reset but being the last week of training before the all England thought may as well push on slightly.

1) conventional deadlifts
w/u to 170x3
W/s 5x3 @ 200

2) cable rows 3x15 @ 50

Hoping this work on my weaknesses will pay dividends.

weighed 104.5kg this morning so still ok.

5x3 at 200 is a good session, but for a sumo lifter why are you effectively going heavy on assistance work?
3x3x225 sumo would have been awesome and set you up for a crack at 260.

Well Ian, as you know there is very little in my training that I do without giving a great deal of thought to.

I agree that 3x3 @ 225 should equal an attempt at 260, however if you remember back to February thats the approach I took, hitting 3x3 at 230 prior to competition, and this was only good for 245 and a failed 250. Reps mean nothing when it comes to big deadlifts I found, as there comes a point where weaknesses show, i.e. big singles.

Clearly then something was wrong, and my conclusion was a weak lower back, i.e. nothing to finish that big deadlift when on the edge and form isnt perfect, i.e. last attempt at competition.

So I thought about it, spoke to Kev, and he saw it as a good idea to do conventional to so weaknesses are sorted, and lets be fair 200kg is a lot for me conventional deadlifting, but deadlifting in general its warm up weight, so its not taxing me that greatly to affect sumo pulls but building my lower back.

I also did as he advised and worked up to big doubles on Sumo, with very few sets, and again it seemed to be working, with a double at 240 fairly comfortably, and a reasonable single at 250.

Anyway, I think I am better equiped than February to have a go at 260, but we shall see. Conclusion, Finch formula is a brilliant guide, but there comes a point when weaknesses will come out and you cant move that bar!

Hope thats a comprehensive reply, as others may have wondered why I had been pushing the conventional pulls and seamingly slacking on Sumo as well.

So you agree then that you were going heavy on assistance work!

You are as logical as ever, but when was the last time you witnessed Kevin pulling conventional in training? You're un-equipped sumo deadlifting is now on a par with Kevin but I've never seen Kevin do heavy conventional training!

Remember both you and Kevin are lifting unequipped in the 105's in 11 days time, my forecast is Kevin 595Kg total you 590Kg total.

True but he did in his day.

It would be stupid to just try what I did before and expect different results, the very definition of insanity Happy

I won't be any worse off than February hopefully pull at least 250 but we will see.

Thanks for comparing me to kev though lol, and Malc I expect nothing less from you Happy

Bit of a nothing session yesterday, I was joined by my girlfriends brother and his friend, who wanted to bench and learn how to squat, and given they both bench between 50 - 70kg and I lift in a cramped garage this made loading and unloading the bar rather cumbersome, so it impacting on plans really. So instead I just did an easy session with openers in mind.

1) WGP - 25 reps

2) Bench
W/U to 70x5
Paused 90, 105, 120 x 2, 135x1, 3x1 @ 130 - Will have another bench session or 2 before the comp but I'm fairly happy with a 130 opener I think, as obviously these are done without a nice lift out.

At this point I taught them to squat, although disappointinly they were enquiring whether I had a "pad" they could use so the bar didnt hurt there back, I told them they wouldnt be squating with me if thats what they wanted to use! Both did quite well, 70kg at a first ever attempt is quite good I think for a few reps.

Odd session yesterday I was struggling with depth, seemed to all be 2:1 or parallel odd as it's a weight I have done 3 with and Ian called as deep so who knows, won't panic just yet.

Anyway,

1) squats
W/u to 170x2
W/s 6x1 @ 190 - possible opener

2) dead lifts
W/u to 190x2
W/s 230, 240 x2 - opener roughly depending how I feel come the dead lifts.

You did 5 level squats then finally buried the 6th!
You'll be fine opening at 190 so long as you put your arse on the floor with it.
There is no reason why you can't go 190/200/210.

I'm still predicting a 590 total next week!

Overall I guess I'm happy with yesterdays results, but to many mistakes cost me a 600 total which should have been well within me, so thats annoyed me underperforming by 20kg at least.

Anyway,

1) Squats
Opener - 190 3 whites very deep per Ian
2nd - 200 2 whites - my usual depth per Ian
3rd - 205 3 reds - came up, ref said depth fine but bar rolled on my back, unsure why thats a fail but never mind, 3 reds is 3 reds so cant complain.

2) Bench
Opener - 130 3 whites fairly comfortable, got offline and hit rack though.
2nd & 3rd - 135 both failed

Went wrong, not sure whether it was technique, set up etc. felt we were held a long time before getting a start signal, but cant blame that, my previous work should have made this a minimum but never mind.

3) Deadlifts
Opener - 240 - Easy
2nd - 250 - 3 whites fairly comfortable
3rd - 260 - Fail - Got it to my knees but no further, nothing left Unhappy - Not good enough.

I'm going to re-evaluate my training & competitions as 5/9 lifts is s**t I need to address this. Mark my words next years All England will see 225/145/270 thats my goal 640 total - and hopefully above what the new qualifying total will be.

However good news I did meet the qualifying total this year which was my initial goal!
