The potential harms are not limited to the initial actors. People have neighbours. The trouble is the handshaking analogy isn't endangering anyone who doesn't consent to it. I shake hands with "x". I return home and socially distance from my neighbours as well as doing everything i can to minimise contact with others. My actions have not meaningfully increased the risk to anyone other than my own and "x's" households. As an adult i feel i am within my remit to accept whatever risks i deem reasonable for me and my household. Similarly if i invite someone in to my house/gym/garden against the rules this Christmas. They have the intelligence and freedom of thought to decide if they accept that invitation.

We mostly agree then tbh. I just reserve the right to think people are idiots if they do do certain things hah.

Your first sentence and your second sentence seen to me to be describing one person as two implausibly different people. My actions have not meaningfully increased the risk to anyone other than my own and "x's" households. And everyone who anybody from either of those households comes into contact with, which is obviously not nobody. Especially if you have school-aged children, or work in a public setting.

I shake hands with "x". I return home and socially distance from my neighbours as well as doing everything i can to minimise contact with others. Your first sentence and your second sentence seen to me to be describing one person as two implausibly different people. Both sentences are describing me. I'm all for social distancing and trying to protect others but i decide what that means with minimal recourse to any government advice. On Friday i shook hands with a few men I've worked with all year. On Wednesday i will offer handshakes to two more colleagues. I even took a bottle of hand sanitizer with me for that express purpose. My actions have not meaningfully increased the risk to anyone other than my own and "x's" households. And everyone who anybody from either of those households comes into contact with, which is obviously not nobody. Especially if you have school-aged children, or work in a public setting. Ok, let's stick with the school aged children and follow it through. My son attends a childcare setting with about 10 other kids. We'll assume each of those kids shares their home with 2 parents and 1 other child of school age. Most likely at least one of those parents is still attending some sort of work setting and that will bring them in to contact with (being conservative) a dozen other workers. Add to that the 30+ kids the other sibling is coming in to contact with at school (I've yet to see a school managing to maintain social distancing across break times etc). Thats almost 50 people per child. Gives us around 500 points of contact for my sons childcare (ignoring any relating to the childcare staff themselves). I've raised that number from 500 to 506 (assuming we count just handshakes and ignore the fact that my work had me in contact with these and around a dozen others in the course of my job anyway). Does that increase the risk? Of course, 506 is more than 500. Does it meaningfully increase the risk? I'll strongly argue it does not.

Lighten up... you’re posting a load of old balls on a forum primarily focused (well, initially at least) on strength training. Long live the good old days.
