Hello,

Wondering if anyone could provide some advice.
I've lifted natural for 7 years and am now thinking of doing a novice strongman comp.
I've seen what sort of weights tend to be the norm at novice comps, and know what I can lift in the gym but dont have a clue when it comes to tyres, logs and farmers etc.

Could anyone give me some guidance on what sort of basic gym strength is required as a foundation for novice comps?

My current lifts are these:

Height - 6ft, Weight 101kg.
Bench - 140kg x 1rep, 105kg x 8.
Deadlift - 182.5kg x 1, 150kg x 8.
Squat - 180kg x 2 (not done 1), 120kg x 20.
Strict military - 65kg x 8. (not done a max lift attempt)
I've always trained for size with pre-exhausts etc, and am hoping with decent strength training I can make some good gains.

Cheers

i know tony recently did a under 105 comp and it was 220 deadlift for reps in 75 seconds...

there are loads of strongmen on here who can fill you in but you need to practise on some strongman stuff and go from there , great benchpress though !!

my lifts when I started last year were:

dl - 220
sqt - 190
overhead - about 110

and I got a beating. I had no event experience though which helps alot. best thing to suggest is find somewhere to train events and go and have a go. whereabouts are you based?

Like the others have said, your best bet would be to find somewhere to train events and have a go. Id work on getting your deadlift up and start doing some explosive overhead lifting (push press, jerks etc). Strict shoulder strength will help but its who lifts the most that wins.

Id start push pressing/jerking straight away. Good luck with it all!

when i started 5 years ago
dl = 250
bench = 150
squat =200
oh press = 100
log press = 100

o compete in the opens now, so you best bet with your lifts is to focus on dl squats and oh lifts and start doing events training or movements so you can get ready for a comp.

How long is a pice of string?

Deffinatly work on core power, deadlifts and overheads are a must for strongman, and squats are a must for anyone.

Also whats all this 'natural' stuff people keep talking about, is that like organic bread or somthing? Dr Matt does not understand

Cheers to all of you.

Advice taken, by the looks of your lifts at your first comps I really need to up my deadlifts and practice push-presses. I need to get the technique right, If im not strict I wobble alot!

I've already split into Push/Pull/Legs day focusing on Deadlifts, Bench, militaries and squats. With the addition of rows and close grip benches on relevant days etc.

Im in Hadleigh in Essex and have been told about a gym called Ministry of Muscle in Kent which Ill have to try to get to. Will events once a month be ok for now do you think?

Ill probably look to compete next summer so im hoping 12months will be enough to make a difference.

Matt by natural I didnt only mean organic bread. Its beans and soya and Jasmine tea too!

If you drive its probably not that difficult for you to get to Will Sans mate. Why dont you drop him a PM and see if he wouldnt mind you training with him every once in a while.

Nothing beats practice on the implements.

First thing IMO, is you need to get training events. They are so differnt to gym lifts. Whatever people say, IMO you will never be able to replicate yoke, stones, tyre etc in the gym

Concentrate on DL and OH. DL is often an event, and also has good overlap for farmers

If I was you, I would be nailing DL, OH, Cleans and Squats as your mian lifts in the gym, with event training if possible. Even once every three weeks/a month would be helpful
