Hi guys just a quick question from some of you powerlifters

A mate of mine is a month out from his first meet, he has only just been training for strength (bodybuilding before that) and has no idea how to structure his workouts from now up to the meet he has and to peak effectively for maximum perfromance.

I have no idea myself either hence asking here, I realise there are probably a number of variables but if we could get a rough sort of idea (% ,sets, etc)

all I can Tell you is hes doing a juniors, uner 80 I think and has been just maxing out every session, I told him he needs to stop doing this.

He currently has a squat day, bench day and deadlift day once a week for each

any help would be great cheers guys

I asked a similar question about a month ago about a comp that was to be tomorrow (has been postponed now) and the advice I got was work up to a few heavy doubles in each lift each session.

Work up to about 90-95% for 2,3 or 4 doubles and up the weight each session if this is achieved. The key is to not fail reps so listen to your body.

The relatively low volume means you can train more frequently. I have squatted moderate to heavy for the last 8 or 9 sessions without bother (apart from a slight injury to my elbow trying to power snatch)

If he hasn't been training that long, "peaking" is mostly a case of being recovered on the day I think. Minimal volume in the week before, few days off or very light workouts beforehand. Best advice you can give him is to learn commands, and practice paused bench I reckon.

Commands are easy to trip up on if you don't practice them a little
