“To build real strength and power, you have to train volume with more reps, that’s it. Don’t be afraid of your upcoming meets. Lower your weights nonetheless. Just forget your ego and work like a robot with volume.

Soon enough, your body will tell you when you’re ready for a PR. You will walk across the gym and see a 320 kg (706 pounds) barbell on the floor, and your previous PR was 300 kg (661 pounds), and you will know, intuitively, that you can lift it. Don’t hesitate to just do routine work, volume work, with 70 or 80 % of your max and plenty of sets and reps. That doesn’t mean that you should do 15 reps and more with tiny weights.

Let’s take a squat workout for example, 5 sets of 5 reps. My best squat is 360 kg (793 pounds), so I workout with 270-290 kg (595-639 pounds) and squat 5 × 5 for every workout. I use the same system for the deadlift. My best deadlift is 417 kg (919 pounds), so I train with 320-330 kg (705-707 pounds), no more often than once a month. However, I usually train with 300 kg (661 pounds) for 5 sets of 5 reps each. This is the type of program that builds real strength and power over time. It’s very demanding, burns a lot of calories and taxes recovery to the max.”

Anyone train similar to this?

Not quite the same but a chap at my regular gym who just happens to be a current world champ and has won everthing else in tested comps in the past 20+ years never goes close to max.
Last comp he squated & pulled round about the 270/285kg mark IIRC.
He will squat one week then deadlift the following....
He will typically do 1 top set of 8-10 reps at circa 180kg and thats it!
He knows what he can do in competition thru experiance, he's in his late 40s now

I did it for a month and I noticed big differences in my bench, squat and deadlift.

The biggest improvement was my bench, I struggled for ages to hit a 100+ but that style of training helped me hit it n go past it.

5 x 5 is one of the best routines to follow IMO

The Eastern Block developed it and they know a thing or 2 when it comes to weightlifting/power routines Wink

It's pretty much the opposite of what I have done in the past, 70% seems very low to me for working sets but I'm willing to give it a shot

Plenty of hard work and volume with moderate and submax percentages?

Yes.

Lots of people train like that. Lots and lots.

It is easier for a start but once ur a few weeks in u could increase the weight so ur 70% u started with would become ur 50%, and when u go to try a pb u will surprise your self.

What do u mean frequency?, I would start off with a moderate weight n warm up for a few sets then work my way up to my old 1 rep max n depending on how it felt I would put on 2.5/5kg plates n just keep adding weight till I could only hit 1 rep. When I first did it I was hoping to hit 100 but ended up repping it out for 10 n worked my way up to 130

Definitely agree with this, training too close to my max has always slowed my progress down. Recently I dropped the weights on my big lifts down to 60% and doing tons of reps. Slowly adding weight, trying to build back up to my current 1RM's for reps.

I prefer and gain better with much lower percentages and more reps, these days.

What happens if your hobby is lifting heavy weights ??

I don`t train to compete .. I train because I enjoy training and I enjoy training because I lift heavy ..

In the past 8 weeks ive deadlifted twice a week every week and my top weight has been over 300kg every time . I`ve probably done 50+ 300kg deadlifts ..

WHY ?? because I don't want to train light ? That's not what my hobby is ..

Anybody feel the same or am I out here alone .. ? I just don`t get it .

It's fine if you can get away with it! I've always been quite jealous of your ability to hit heavy singles, triples seemingly all the time!

If I could get away with it I would, but I think after repeated injuries from max weights, that the pleasure of lifting at your max every time is reduced if not completely eliminated. Lifting heavy every now and then and lifting MORE every now and then is preferable.

Just my 2 pennies
