Limiting factor in hack squats is how much pain you can take from the bar gouging the hell out of your legs rather than your strength so I don't think they're very useful outside of a bodybuilding routine.

I've found hack squats good for hypertrophy & strength of the VMO, a muscle that is almost always under-developed. It's an isolation exercise so not a staple of every program but will help with strength levels in squats and general knee health. Also messes people up quite a bit.

Grin I personally think Squats, Fronts, SLDL are the only exercises you need for strong legs/ass!

I always get a rash on the inside of my arms doing these, dont know whether its because my grip is too close or what. Very awkward lift though!
