Hi Fellas,

In the spirit of contributing positively to the board I thought I would post about something that I've been thinking about recently.

In terms of training, are you in a comfort zone?

In the past I've pushed myself sufficiently but in retrospect was complacent and letting that comfortable mentality slow progress down. I think it's so easy to get used to lifting somewhere, or setting low goals when the top guys go out the way to be better. Some of us probably moan about having to drive so far to train with like minded individuals, yet the people at the top of their game travel 2 hours to find decent training and love it.

On another hand, are you in the comfort zone in life? Relationship?

How do we recognize if we are the comfort zone?

I am in my comfort zone (this week atleast) I have lost a bit of focus and drive, this usually happens when i need a break or just have nothing to really push myself for, mabie at the bash in october i will do some 1 rep maxes and then i can push it with some goals.

trouble is powerlifting isnt life or death and injury/illness can stop it all dead, so i dont rely on it to keep me sane, its just fun.

and im the 3rd best bencher in great britain.

Paul, my point exactly, I think we all lift better when out of comfort zone to a certain degree.

Without going into too much detail I dont have alot of free time in my life so outside of family stuff I spend pretty much all of it training or planning/thinking about training. If trainings going s**te or im injured or I cant get to train for whatever reason im generally not a happy bunny. I think im probably a bit obsessive about it and certainley never in the comfort zone. I dont think thats a bad thing though. I love the pressure of training for competition and competing. When I see all my mates getting smashed on stella and coke three nights a week I know which life id rather be leading!

LIVE FOR THE NEXT PB!!!!!

I tanked out 6 in a row one morning after a big drinking session the night before. It hurt by the end, but I put my all into it and certainly left my comfort zone.

I recently got back from some extended travels. With lifting almost non-existent I came back to the UK benching about 70kg and squatting a ragged 130kg.

Now doing THAT in public, was pretty f**kin uncomfortable.

So now i'm back to the point i'm fairly happy with my poundages, what should I do? I have my goals, I have them in writing in my training log and in the back of my mind and they've always been a strong motivation for me. But the real kicker would be to feel that feeling I got in the gym on the first day back. I've always lifted better after attending a large competition.

I really need to go and lift with some stronger lifters.

Damn, you got back into lifting decent poundages pretty quickly mate! You've only been back a few weeks now haven't you?

Been back probably 9 weeks or so now. Just didn't post my log for a while, took a little while to get my head back into it.

Fazc raises a couple of very good points about where you train keeping you in the comfort zone and also competition improving you. If you train at a "normal" gym with non lifters it's easy to become stuck in the same routine and your progress slow down . Recently several of you have started training a Addlington and have reported how this has improved your lifting. Has it moved you out of the comfort zone? Well you will probably be a smaller fish in a bigger pond now and it will introduce some friendly competition amongst you.
I think an impending contest is a great way of moving your progress on and I would wager that those who lift competatively thoughout the year make better progress than those who choose not to compete.

from my personal experience i would say what you say is true Bryn. Until this year I had a "medium-term goal" of competing in PLing "one day" but with no set objective and no great idea what I was doing. I train in a gym where there isnt a single other PLer or Oly lifter etc. As a result I have been floating around and actually got really demotivated and depressed in Feb this year and gave up weights for a few months. Then mid/end March Joni pushed me firmly in the direction of the NW open and with an objective and focus in my training it was like a new start. Same goes for the Manc and Districts that I missed and then British Uneq. With competitions to train towards I always feel slighlty on the edge and my progress is going forwards in leaps and bounds. With increased contact via internet with other PLers and strength athletes, my training is more focused and specific and I am motivated. There is a degree of absence of competition but thats probably a general phenomenon experienced by female Plers etc LOL

I train at a normal gym with normal lifters. In all honesty I think if you let yourself drift into this "comfort zone" it has nothing at all to do with anyhting other than your own lack of application and motivation.

Training in new surroundngs will not suddenly make you stronger it may just force you to grow a set of balls. Something that could have been achieved before if you'd applied yourself.

Yes Tony, but how do you know if you're in your comfort zone mate?

To the people who say they need a goal to train towards I say this. I have a goal year round which is to add weight to the bar whenever possible.

Surely everyone who tains seriously shares this common aim.
