A strange one today. I agreed to let someone come and train with me at 2, so rushed around to get things done, moved cars to create space in driveway, etc., etc. And he didn't show! No call, text, nothing... Anyone, I prefer training alone, so

Bench

Bar for 10
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
110 for 1
120 for 1
135 for 1
125 for 1*
125 for 2
115 for 3
105 for 8
95 for 10
Finish

*Felt so heavy I thought I hadn't taken weight off. Turned out I had, and I was just weak. Managed a double at the second attempt, and was worried I wouldn't make my other numbers either- but I did! Not quite sure what that says, if anything.

That was 2.5 heavier than the previous session, and I got everything but the 125 x 3, so although I left disappointed maybe I shouldn't have been.

Onwards and upwards. 300 lbs on Thursday...

A disappointing session. No fire in the belly, everything felt heavy, everything in the garage cold and damp, wearing three layers.

Bench

Bar for 10
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
110 for 1
120 for 1
130 for 1
135 - fail
120 for 3 - just
110 for 5
100 for 8
90 for 10
Finish

Disappointed to fail the 135, and adjusted the rest of the numbers down accordingly. Not a lot more to be said.

A day late, because I had a hospital appointment yesterday. Decided to take a step back after the debacle last time.

Bench
Bar for 10
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
110 for 1
120 for 1
130 for 1
100 for 8 x 5 sets
Finish.

The 130 was far better than last time, with a nice long pause and no out breath. The last rep with 100 on the last set was right on my limit, which is how a good session should end. 110 for 5 x 5 next time is the plan, and I'll keep the top warm up at 130 until I put 5 Kg on my reps. Hopefully the previous session was my nadir, as today definitely felt better.

Second bench session of the week with, annoyingly, no sessions in between for various reasons. But I plod on regardless.

Bench
Bar for 10
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
110 for 1
120 for 1
130 for 1
130 for 1
110 for 5 x 5 sets
Finish.

For some reason, the first set with 110 was the toughest. I ended up doing 130 twice because there was no pause on the first one. 130 is, frankly, very comfortable, but after recent setbacks I'm not going any higher until I get a few rep sessions in.

Happy with the work I did today. Hard enough to work me, but doable.

Back to Monday for the first session of the week, so hopefully I'll get more than two sessions in this week. All singles paused.

Bench
Bar for 10
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
110 for 1
120 for 1
130 for 1
120 for 3 x 5 sets
100 for 10
Finish.

Hard work, but I think I have a little more to come in 3s. We'll find out in three session's time. Particularly delighted to get 10 with 100 at the end of quite a hard session. Got every rep. Not a lot more to be said. All good. Happy

Back and Biceps

Not done much balancing work in recent weeks, so hopefully this is the start of a run of hitting it regularly again.

Band Work
Y Pulls for 20 x 3 sets
W Pulls for 20 x 3 sets
T Pulls for 20 x 3 sets (palms in)
T Pulls for 20 x 3 sets (palms out)
L Pulls for 20 x 3 sets

DB Arm Curls
12.5s for 15 x 5 sets

Finish

Good to get back to this kind of stuff, even if it was a bit on the light and gentle side today.

Slightly later than planned, and so slightly less energetic than anticipated.

Bench (all singles paused)
Bar for 10
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
110 for 1
120 for 1
130 for 1
135 for 1
102.5 for 8 x 5 sets
Finish.

Strength is coming back. The last time I tried 135, it beat me. Today, there was a decent pause and no out breath until right on lockout.

The 8s were tough, but I got them all. After the last set, I was too frazzled to even unload the bar fully. But by then the workout was over, every rep had been hit, and there was an unplanned single with 135 to boot. 5s on Monday. More like proper powerlifting, not this cardioesque nonsense.

You know those days when you have no energy, everything feels heavy, and the whole session is a struggle from start to finish? Well today wasn't one of these days! Everything went up with something in reserve. Whatever I've done differently today, I need to do it again!

Bench
Bar for 10
40 for 8
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
120 for 1 - paused
130 for 1 - paused
140 for 1 - no pause, but who cares, I'm back to 140 before Christmas
112.5 for 5
112.5 for 5
112.5 for 5
112.5 for 5
112.5 for 6 - because I could!
Finish

Delighted with today's session - both the numbers and the way I felt. I had a training partner today, so I thought it was worth trying a touch and go 140, and it flew! No one was more shocked than me.

Happy days! On the way back.

I watched this years Romesh christmas special and he visited the inner + outers ... it looked very very nice , thought i might see you , but it seems they are bigger and more populated than I expected.

Haha, yes, it portrayed us better than most of the twee offerings do. Lewis&Harris is actually the third biggest of the British isles - after Great Britain and Ireland.

A tough session today. Life got in the way and it was nearly 6 before I was able to train. It was freezing cold and the biggest battle was keeping warm between sets.

Bench
Bar for 10
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
120 for 1 - paused
130 for 1 - paused
122.5 for 3
122.5 for 3
122.5 for 3
122.5 for 3
122.5 for 4
Finish.

Had to really work hard, mentally and physically. Not being properly fuelled and training after running around all afternoon (metaphorically) isn't the best preparation. I nearly missed the third rep on the second working set by cutting the rest too much, so I was delighted to squeeze out an extra rep on the last set.

I'm still missing too much ancillary work, but at least I'm keeping bench on track.

And breathe...

First session post-Christmas. I got up infeasibly late, and plans for a 2.00 pm work out morphed into a 5.00 pm one instead.

Trudged to the garage around 5.00, with all the willingness of a man heading to the gallows. Cold, wet, and I was creaking. The plan called for 105 for 8 x 5 sets, but with today's energy levels, that was never going to happen. So let's adapt - more weight, less reps, and a very gradual warm up.

Bench - all singles paused
Bar for 10
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
110 for 1
120 for 1
130 for 1
135 for 1
130 for 2
125 for 3
120 for 4
115 for 5
Finish.

To add insult to injury - literally - I forgot to take my anti-inflammatories beforehand, and my right forearm ached throughout. So much so that on my last set I nearly quit after the first rep, but I found the wherewithal to keep going.

Considering everything, quite pleased with today's effort. I know 130 x 2 doesn't compare with the 137.5 for 3 I did a few months back, but it's still my best double for a while, and the second was no harder than the first.

Tier three has also nipped the training partner option in the bud, sadly. It would be good to have a bit of banter between sets. Still, needs must, at least I can train, and I'm healthy-ish, so mustn't grumble.

The last one of the year, a year of highs and lows that I really wanted to end with a paused 140. I went to bed at a reasonable time (for me) last night and went out like a light, but I woke up in the middle of the night, struggled to get back to sleep again, got up late and then, at 2 in the afternoon, when I should have been training, I fell asleep in front of the telly. It was 5, after half a litre of energy drink, before I felt up to it. I had to feel right, because this wasn't just any session, this was the last one of the year!

Bench - all singles paused
Bar for 10
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
120 for 1
140 for 1
130 for 2*
120 for 5
110 for 8
Finish.

*I think there would have been 3 - which was my target - but on both reps my left hand hit the safety rack, and I was distracted. I was obviously too far up the bench. No big deal, I'll do it next time.

Really pleased with today. My best paused press this year was 147.5, my best 5 set 127.5, and my best 8 set 117.5, so to finish a very trying year within 7.5 of my bests has to be satisfying. Back on creatine, spirulina and protein as well. It's an amazing coincidence that my numbers went down while I was off them - almost as if they do something!

Went to the garage as the last of the light faded to do some arm and shoulder work. After two warm up sets, I wasn't warming up. In fact my fingertips began to freeze, even with gloves on. So I took some dumbbells and the shoulder horn into the kitchen and carried on there instead. In truth, it was hard in a different way, I'm not used to training in such heat, but needs must.

DB Arm Curls
10s for 20 x 2 sets
12.5s for 15 x 5 sets
12.5s for 20 x 5 sets

DB SLRs
10s for 10 x 3 sets

DB FLRs
10s for 10 x 3 sets

Shoulder Horn
10s for 10 x 3 sets

Finish.

Doesn't read like much but that's a lot of (light) curls after not doing any for weeks. Might do some band work in the kitchen tomorrow if the cold temperatures persist. Peaking for 8th February!
