ur8 lads ive been training for some time now but this year i decided i wanted to go into strongman so changed my training to gain strength. Ive been comin on sound breaking all my best lifts by big margins in the last few months, but ive started to get a pain in my lower back that comes and go's. Its right in the center of my lower back and i can completely ease the pain by contracting my glutes (arse cheeks). Wondered if my bodys become a little out of balance, my training routine is dead simple...Last week...Day 1 Bench 3x3 116kg Barbell Row 5x3 98kg Squat 3x3 182kg...Day 2 Clean and Press 3x3 95kg Deadlift 3x3 182kg.

Really enjoying this new way of training and dont want this back pain to hinder my progress...Has anybody got any ideas what it could be??

whenever anyone says back pain and mentions their glutes I am jump to the assumption of sciatica. I don't know whether the fact that it disappears when you contract the glutes contraindicates that or not?

No help at all, I know!

Sounds like posterior pelvic tilt flattening out your lordotic curve due to inactive glutes.

Based on the limited info you've given it's a fair guess.

Not really possible to without looking at you properly. Where are you based?

You could do with a decent sports physio or coach to run you through a few movement patterns and firing sequences to determine if it is your glutes, and then recomment things specific to you. Unfortunately it's not as simple as 'do A and B to solve the problem'. I started work with a lifter with an imbalance today, responded really well to some restricted range of motion and mechanically to external forces being applied. There's no way it could have been done without getting hands on I'm afraid.

More than happy to look at you and scratch my head! Grin

Physios are often good for diagnosing issues, but you'll often find that they're not so hot on getting you right as a sports person, just at getting you up and about as a 'normal 9-5er'.

Often just a PT or coach with a good eye and biomechanical knowledge can work out how best to progress.

Plus it's a good opportunity to prod and poke you Grin

You should be able to find someone closer. I know Edinburgh Uni has good people on site.
