NoClue

Hi Guys

Been a big fan of strongman for an age and mucked around in the gym for a while on and off (now 34).

But my new years resolution is to get serious and maybe try and get to a standard good enough to enter a local comp.

From what I read I need to be able to Dead 220, squat 180 and shoulder press 120 to really be able o completw in the lowest entry level, does that sound about right?

I have always done the more lets say poser type excercises before and mostly on machines, but recently started dealdifts, squats and should press in mind for my goal.

So at 6,3 and 17 stone (prob 15.5 lean rest blubber lol) I currently dead 185kg (no wearing belt at mo but should start right?) my squat is appaling as I have ignored legs to long as guys do so 130kg is current max on a Smiths machine (although I max out the horizontal leg press machine a 220kg for 10+ reps no prob but guess thats alot easier) and have weak shoulders with a 80kg max standing with a bar. Bench is 120 but not really tried for a single PB yet.

So my plan was to train 3 times a week, doing a on off of 100% 1 rep workouts one week and 50% for reps following weelk (read this on here somewhere).

Food wise I have bene increasingf protein, keeping carbs down and taking cod liver, creatine and l glutamine with ammino acids.

So basically am I on the right track and what tips do you have (or as I can see that sub 90kg guys are doign more than me on here in 20' should I just enjoy training and forget comps? lol)

Cheers!

everyone starts somewhere. start simple doing the compound movements Squats, front squats, Deadlift, Bench. and try and find a gym or person near you to try some events. IMO the sooner the better with trying events.

as for diet dont ask me

Sounds like you are in a great position to consider training for a first comp. We are about the same age and weight and I have plenty of comps left in me!!

Best things to do in my opinion are:

-Focus on compound lifts
-Read peoples training journals and watch their vids to get some idea of what others are doing and how they train (some good and some bad though so be aware).
-Forget bodybuilding/posing technique (others may disagree) in strongman, it doesnt matter how you get the weight up as long as you get it up (for example a push press will suddenly increase the amount of weight you can lift over your head because you are using your LEGS instead of just shoulders....!)
-Find your most local strongman gym and get down there ASAP!!! Events training is a WHOLE different ball game (you will love it, but it hurts!)
-Start a journal on here for critique and feedback
- be prepared for critisism and a lot of piss taking bas***ds as this site is full of them...Wink

Good luck!

What part of the country are you in?

Cheers guys, yes I am prepared to get some grief lol!

Im in North Devon so I have not found any strongman gyms near by, I am training in a normal type gym wit hmostly machines but it does have dumbells up to 50kg and a olympic bar with bench and a smith machine.
AvatarThing
all you need is a bench, barbell, weights and squat stand or a power cage, stay away from the smith machine just now. work up slowly with weight with your compound lifts and let your body strengthen and if you feel you need a belt then get one can recommend the ones from strength shop (sponsor on this site)

Welcome to the circus.
Yes some 90kg guys are doing more than you but they're all a bunch of freaks anyway so don't let that put you off. I'd have to agree with what's already been said about working on your dead and squat. Don't be rushed and take your time and the lifts will go up. As for overhead both strength and tech are important here. I doubt loads people will strict press 120kg although add a bit of leg drive and it becomes a whole lot easier.

Most importantly make sure you enjoy it.
AvatarJackRevans
im about to start competing and my squat and overhead are pretty much the same, and iv only deadlifted 210 so i wouldnt worry about that. just jump into the deep end like me Grin

Cheers for the encouragement guys, just been to gym, one thing I am lucky with is I work for myself and gym i just over road so I can train every day during day, was doing every day but judging by the ache I have been getting since switching to heavy low reps I am going to need more recovery time!

Every 2 days plenty to start with on that kind of training. If you want to train more you could do really light stuff on other days. Mobility, flexibility, active recovery type stuff

Once you get used to the demands you will be able to feel your way in to how well you recover and what training schedule works best for you.

most important thing you can do now and get in the habit f is to stretch before and after your session.
NoClue
Have to be honest thats not something I do, so cheers defo will get myself in habit

first comp i did, i had a 185 kilo dead, a 145 kilo squat and a 65kilo strict and came mid table, the test is how good you are at events mate, also if i were you i woudln't be keeping carbs down
